A joint statement from OpenAI and Microsoft
- _alternator_ 1y agoWow that’s opaque. Full text: > OpenAI and Microsoft have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the next phase of our partnership. We are actively working to finalize contractual terms in a definitive agreement. Together, we remain focused on delivering the best AI tools for everyone, grounded in our shared commitment to safety.
- stogot 1y agoWas not there something in the hacker news guidelines about avoiding “announcements of future announcements” in the past? I don’t see it now
- furyofantares 1y agoWell, not quite the full text. It then says "See also Statement on OpenAI’s Nonprofit and PBC." and links to this, also posted today: https://openai.com/index/statement-on-openai-nonprofit-and-pbc/ https://openai.com/index/statement-on-openai-nonprofit-and-p...
- patapong 1y agoThe most interesting thing about this statement is probably the fact that they felt it was neccesary to make such a statement.
- digdugdirk 1y agoRight? Very much a vibe of, "Your mother and I wanted to let you know that we'll be talking about our relationship soon. But we want you to know that we'll always love you." I don't know what that means, but also was that ever a concern I should have had before?
- freehorse 1y agoI was expecting they would announce reaching agi :(
- pwarner 1y agoIs someone else launching something next week?
- happa 1y agoWho caved?
- aspenmayer 1y agoSpelunkers? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caving#Etymology https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caving#Etymology
- tech234a 1y agoHere is the same statement posted on Microsoft's website: https://blogs.microsoft.com/blog/2025/09/11/a-joint-statement-from-microsoft-and-openai/ https://blogs.microsoft.com/blog/2025/09/11/a-joint-statemen...
- alamzin 1y agoNot completely the same. On OpenAI‘s site it begins with "OpenAI and Microsoft" and on Microsoft‘s with "Microsoft and OpenAI" :)
- maxbond 1y agoA proof by example that equality does not imply identity.
- hulitu 1y ago> A proof by example that equality does not imply identity. In this case, is the opposite.
- maxbond 1y agoHmm? Semantically they are equivalent ("this is the same statement"), bytewise they are not identical ("not completely the same"). Both parent comments are true statements. Things can be in the same equivalence class without being identical. What am I missing?
- htrp 1y agoThey are going to couples counseling.
- zb3 1y agoTLDR?
- maxbond 1y agoMicrosoft has tentatively agreed to invest $100B+ into OpenAI's corporate arm. There is not yet a firm, binding agreement. OpenAI says it will remain a nonprofit + public benefit corporation and describes itself as a "philanthropic organization." They're soliciting applications for a $50M pool of grants for things like AI education and "community innovation."
- Woodi 1y agoStill a infomess :> Looks like OpenAI dropped Azure in favor of Oracle but MS still invests B's $ ? And OpenAI is a "non-profit" so Oracle strait get 75% or more of OpenAI fees ? All that strange bilions just like in ad tech... Why manager pay so much bilions ?? It must be managers, who else it can be ? Except govs ofc :)
- freehorse 1y agoIt is literally 3 sentences ffs
- titmouselucifer 1y agoI asked the chatgpt box at the bottom of the screen for additional details, and I think it was lying to me.

- ChrisArchitect 1y agoIs this some kind of investor-pressured reaction to the supposed Oracle deal? Not sure the exact nature of things but would think some ppl were getting some calls yesterday.

- aspenmayer 1y agoI think you meant to link to my HN submission for the NYT article?[0] Instead you just linked to TFA that this thread is in again? [0] https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=45217728 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=45217728
- SilverElfin 1y agoWhat’s the point of making the statement? Avoiding legal or regulatory consequences for anti competitiveness or for the exploitation of tax free growth as a nonprofit?
