Interesting, swimming (at least in my hometown) is part of most school physical education curriculums in grade schools. You have it once a week in public swimming pools for a semester or two.
They aim to get you to at least a basic fitness ("Seepferdchen") for swimming (25m) and light "diving"(picking up something from shoulder deep water).
It appears this isn't the case in the US? Would probably be a good thing to add.
- matwood 1y agoProbably depends where you live in the US. For example, I grew up on the southeast US coast and we had basic boater safety as part of drivers ed in high school. I also had swimming lessons, but they were not part of a school curriculum.
- jasonpeacock 1y agoWhen I grew up in Alaska, because of all the fishing/boating, swimming was both included in elementary PE and a high school graduation requirement. Oddly, swimming is not required curriculum in Hawaii (per a friend) because they assume everyone already knows how to swim - except she couldn’t! She’d only ever been wading at the beaches.
