Growing backlash yet used by hundreds of millions of people and growing.
- SkyeCA 1y agoBy this logic we could deduce that alcohol is also a net-positive for society. A lot of people doing something doesn't necessarily make that thing right, good, or beneficial.
- rpdillon 1y agoYou're conflating whether or not AI is a net good with whether or not there's a backlash against it. Those are different.
- jusssi 1y agoHow do you know alcohol is not a net positive?
- mystified5016 1y agoAll of the innocent civilians we've had to scrape off the pavement, for one
- aspenmayer 1y agoMost of the gains to society in pursuit of alcohol have probably already been gained, and have paid dividends long ago. What’s left is the alcohol industry, which is huge and fairly consolidated, but I think home brewing is legal in many places for your own consumption. There are a huge number of microbreweries with restaurants and bars attached where I live, which is a startup to a certain reading. Folks are finding new yeasts and making new recipes. The wine industry is older than many hills. The losses to society in pursuit of alcohol are very high, and technology might only enable more people to make poor choices after drinking, which is not a good thing at all, but safer options are also enabled by tech, like ride share services. Technology is a tool to be used, and using alcohol poorly reflects on the user as much as the society which normalizes and enables poor use. Alcohol is just so old and established it just doesn’t even register as being a technological invention or byproduct itself, but it is only fair to situate it as such in this context alongside technologies and social issues that we can understand and mitigate the negative effects and externalities of.
- Incipient 1y agoYeah this feels like a lot of "backlash" scenarios. The media makes a song and dance about a few loud voices, but even if everyone is thinking it, little will really change - rightly or wrongly.
- kylebenzle 1y agoAnd same with opium, literally MILLIONS of contented users yet people STILL say their is a backlash?
- DonsDiscountGas 1y agoYes millions of people like it and millions of other people hate it. This isn't a contradiction
- Gigachad 1y agoYou don't really get a choice. The tech companies force you to use their AI tools and stick their AI generations in the middle of workflows you were already doing. Meta now goes through your private camera roll to stick your unpublished photos in their AI slop machine.
- throwawa14223 1y agoI know several people who have mandates to use it at work. The backlash is coming.
