The problem is the web sucks. CSS sucks. HTML sucks. Javascript is perfectly fine, actually. Browser security sucks. CORS sucks. CSP sucks. SVG sucks. Favicons suck. Shadow DOM sucks. Video controls suck. Web audio sucks. WebGPU sucks. W3C sucks. Chromium sucks.
You know what I'd do to be able to build a website using SwiftUI or GTK?
Given the terribleness of the web, naturally people will use bloated UI frameworks and build tools to even slightly avoid using them directly.

- Aldipower 1y agoThe web has grown over the last 30 years by maintaining backwards-compability. I think this is a huge success. Your a still able to display a website from 1995 in your modern browser (without https ;-)).
- dgb23 1y agoThe separation of HTML and CSS is almost entirely arbitrary, which makes web development unnecessarily complex and requires way too much discipline to do right. I disagree with SVG though. The format has a lot of problems when you look closely, but in principle it's great and there are a lot of benefits that you get from using it. The main issue i have is that HTML itself stagnated. We still lack extremely basic UI components. > Javascript is perfectly fine, actually. The direction of JS went the wrong way quite a while ago. Keywords like class, let, const and import all break the dynamic nature of JS and the utility thereof. When these things were decided, there was apparently nobody in the room who asked "Wait, what is the point of having a dynamic language again?"
- orwin 1y agoHTML5 is Okay (maybe need an upgrade). Scss is Okay. Svg is Okay. JavaScript is Okay. The rest do suck, but aren't the reason why we use bloated framework. I personally use React because i like reducers reacting to state changes (I think finite state machines are the best thing since sliced bread), and my bosses don't like it when I create my own. Also having builtin, easy to use memoization is great (I avoid looking how it's done so I can keep the illusion that it's done extremely well and optimized).
