This is kind of the same reason I gave up on the Linux desktop and went for macOS. When I first learned about Linux I was thinking "Sweet!. This is going to kick Microsoft's ass!", but this was 30 years ago and instead of a kickass desktop OS, we got 1000 mediocre ones.
- happymellon 1y ago> looks at Windows Vista, 8, 10, 11 I don't think its the mediocre interface thats holding Linux back... Whether its the abomination thats Windows 11, having to fight against an ad ridden interface in 10 or otherwise. Teams hasn't dominated because of a coherent interface, or even because anyone actually wants to use it. Besides, you say 1000 desktops, but there is really only 2 (well 1 since Gnome is the primary interface for the big 3 distros) along with couple of hobby ones that you have to seek out to even learn they exist and a lot of toys that no one outside HN has even heard of.
- IshKebab 1y agoWindows 10 and 11 have great desktops. Definitely still ahead of anything Linux can offer. But I agree it's only partly because of that. The bigger issues are poor hardware support (especially for laptops) and over reliance on the CLI and config files.
- happymellon 1y ago> Windows 10 and 11 have great desktops. We will have to just agree to disagree on that one. Windows 10 reverted back to a warmed over 7, but with flashy boxes to add noise, and the injection of adverts over time. The multi-desktop implementation was half baked, and when applications request focus you can end up with an unresponsive desktop until you find it. 11 is an interface that only a mother could love. Pointless changes like centering the bar make me wonder if you ever used it. It's a step back in every way, but without a guts to try something different like 8. 8 didn't work for laptops/desktops, but at least there was an attempt.
- IshKebab 1y ago> Pointless changes like centering the bar make me wonder if you ever used it. I agree that is dumb, but it's a trivial setting to make it left-aligned again. It's literally the only thing I've changed. Everything else is great. > the injection of adverts over time. I use the IoT LTSC version and have zero ads. I guess there's no guarantee it will last but it's great for now.
- bronlund 1y agoThe highpoint of my Linux desktop journey, was my Compiz Fusion setup. That one kicked ass back in the days :D
- mixmastamyk 1y agoI’d say Mint Cinnamon is better than mediocre. Further try Little Snitch on macos to see how completely out of control it is. Since they implemented the sealed volume it is also a lot harder to configure permanently, so fixing it is less feasible.
