- amelius 1y agoAdvertisements are constantly changing what I want ...

- amelius 1y agoIf ads didn't work, they would not be a multi-billion dollar industry ...
- bluGill 1y agoNot always. I have a mouse problem, none of the existing mousetraps are a good solution. If an ad can tell me about a better mouse trap I'll want it and that is a good thing. Mouse is of course a generic thing above where as technology marches on once in a while it would make my life better if only I know about it. Now when ads make me want a "pet rock" that is a bad thing.
- alickz 1y agoHappens to us all The mind is an open wound susceptible to unhygienic memes like advertising and social media Even now you and I are exposing our minds to all the thoughts in this thread. It's impossible for us not to, it's the reason we're here in the first place So if advertising doesn't change your wants and desires then the problem is you aren't noticing how unhygienic your mind is getting
- nixosbestos 1y agoNah. My possessions fit into three boxes. I buy the same shampoo and conditioner and bar soap I've bought for over a decade. I don't buy things and when I do I research them for hours before buying. It is actually possible to exit the consumerism treadmill. I mean I bought a keychain last year that I put on my backpack, and the vendor had it out on a table. I guess that counts but that's basically the only impulse buy I've made in the last two years. > So if advertising doesn't change your wants and desires then the problem is you aren't noticing how unhygienic your mind is getting I genuinely don't understand what this means.
- LandR 1y agoAll I want is time to go climbing and mountaineering. I mostly can't because I have to work and getting 4-8 weeks off at a time is impossible.
- dagw 1y agoIf that is really all you want, either get a job where you get to go climbing and mountaineering as part of your job. Or reorganise your life you that you can live off of whatever you can earn in 4-8 month of working and then spend the other 4-8 month climbing. I like to pretend that all I really want is to go skiing, but it turns out I also want to live in a nice house and be with my family. And for some reason I actually want that more.
