Is America planning on reducing its insanely high military budget?
- 0xDEAFBEAD 1y agoI hope so. I'm favor of us dramatically scaling back our military commitments, including pulling out of NATO.
- ta1243 1y agoYet America elected a president who doesn't want to cut a cent of defence spending, just redirect it to his mates.
- 0xDEAFBEAD 1y agoWe'll see. "Trump wants U.S., China and Russia to cut military spending in half" https://www.axios.com/2025/02/13/trump-china-russia-military-spending https://www.axios.com/2025/02/13/trump-china-russia-military...
- ta1243 1y agoYet he is unwilling to cut a single cent, indeed there's a 13% increase for defense spending https://www.airandspaceforces.com/trump-proposes-1-trillion-defense-budget-2026/ https://www.airandspaceforces.com/trump-proposes-1-trillion-...
- 0xDEAFBEAD 1y agoWell hopefully he at least pulls out of NATO to give subsequent presidents room to decrease spending.
- ta1243 1y agoPulling out of nato will reduce revenue to US defence manufacturers, so I'd expect defense spending to increase even further thanks to the industrial-military complex
- 0xDEAFBEAD 1y agoI don't think that's quite how it works.
- mrguyorama 1y agoNATO and all other forms of collectivized security make a static level of defense cheaper to achieve. America does not subsidize NATO. In fact, NATO asks each member country to spend 2% of their budget on defense, primarily by purchasing expensive material (US has one of the higher spends on human resources for armies in NATO) from us. It's been a defense sector subsidy since the death of the USSR, right up until Trump made nobody want to buy our equipment.
- 0xDEAFBEAD 1y ago>NATO and all other forms of collectivized security make a static level of defense cheaper to achieve. For Europe, maybe. But the US is spending way more than necessary to defend the homeland. I'm tired of it. That money should go towards our own people. Just like Europeans have been saying. I don't want to subsidize the US military-industrial complex.
- ta1243 1y ago> I don't want to subsidize the US military-industrial complex. Well you picked the wrong government for that!
- 0xDEAFBEAD 1y agoI didn't vote for Trump.
- input_sh 1y agoOn the contrary, proposed budget increases it to 1 trillion while cutting pretty much everything else.
