Crime is down, way down
- aurareturn 2y agoFor those in SF, does it feel like crime is down?
- slater 2y agoYes-ish. Seemingly less car break-ins, for sure.
- hello_computer 2y agothat's what happens when the people leave https://wolfstreet.com/2023/03/30/population-drops-even-more-in-california-san-francisco-bay-area-coastal-southern-california-san-francisco-8-from-peak-but-19-inland-counties-grow/ https://wolfstreet.com/2023/03/30/population-drops-even-more...

- sottol 2y agoUsually, it's the wealthy that tend to leave and depopulation tends to increase "blight" and crime. But I had no idea the population declined so much, that puts other observations about SF into context.
- hello_computer 2y agoThe very wealthy and the very poor two sides of the same coin. Where there is one, the other is sure to be found. My personal experience has been that the wealthy horde more property than they can lease or employ. Hobos find and fill these empty nooks and crevices like water.
- aurareturn 2y agoAny up to date data? My sense is that population is increasing again due to AI jobs.

- jmclnx 2y agoWait to see what happens when the firings in mass begins as Trump cuts social protections. Plus inflation will soon start that will make the Covid Inflation Rates look like good times. So I expect a delayed huge raise in Crime thanks to Trump. But at least gas prices will probably fall once the firings kick in. That is the only thing MAGA seems to cares about.
- pasttense01 2y agoThe key point is that it is REPORTED crime which is down. I think that every year fewer and fewer people are reporting crime--because overwhelmingly it is futile to do so--so only report if it is required to file an insurance claim or it is a major injury.
