SoftBank to acquire chip designer Ampere in $6.5B deal

- alephnerd 2y agoSignificant synergy as SoftBank is a major telco in Japan, and Ampere has been investing heavily into telco usecases like OpenRAN. SoftBank is basically trying to own the entire RAN modernization stack - which is becoming a big part of what will become 6G. Interesting times.
- boulos 2y agoOr that SoftBank owns Arm... and has very publicly said it wants to get into the full chip business, not just reference architecture.

- alephnerd 2y agoThat most likely playec a role as well, but SoftBank has been very open about their backing for O-RAN and building the standards for 6G since 2021.
- everfrustrated 2y agoProbably better than Oracle buying them. I presume SoftBank will keep selling to anybody whereas Oracle would have kept for themselves.
