- ezekg 2y agoAs a user of Firefox and uBlock, I haven't watched a YouTube ad in years, and I use it daily. Is Chrome really that bad that people buy premium to avoid ads?
- shortrounddev2 2y agoI forget where I read this but most people are watching youtube on smart TVs, with smartphones/tablets being #2. Most people who watch youtube do so on a platform where it is difficult to disable ads.
- josefresco 2y ago> most people are watching youtube on smart TVs Pretty sure mobile is still #1 Google had some blog posts on this, but they now redirect to their "Think" website homepage: https://business.google.com/us/think/ https://business.google.com/us/think/ I did find this, no idea how accurate: https://backlinko.com/youtube-users#youtube-usage-by-device https://backlinko.com/youtube-users#youtube-usage-by-device
- ezekg 2y agoThat's a good point. I guess I was only thinking about myself and my own YouTube consumption. My daughter does have to watch ads when watching YouTube on the TV. Now I might have to reconsider the $7 -- even if she likes the Kids ads! May be worth it just for that, since the ads can be borderline sometimes even on YouTube Kids.
- p_ing 2y agoI watch it on FF w/ uBlock as well, but also watch it routinely on an AppleTV. This new sub is perfect since I don't use YT for music.
- throwaway48476 2y agoI like the idea of money going to creators but youtube is far too censorious for a premium content platform.
- awnird 2y agoThis still doesn't resolve the issue of embedded ads. YouTube continues to falsely advertise this as ad-free, but the end result is still loaded with ads.

- legitster 2y agoIt was fascinating hearing LTT talk about how much less money they get from Adsense than from their own embedded ads. They only do two 15-second embedded ads per video, and they make an order of magnitude more money through their in-house ad sales. That is even factoring in the amount of skips, ad-blocking, and the minutes of ads Google puts on their videos. Which begs the question: Do Google's video ads just really suck? Are they just really bad at delivering ads and getting buyers? Is that why they have to shove so many into each video now?
- ferguess_k 2y agoOh it doesn't have downloads so not going to be useful for me. I might just spend some dollars for a month of Premium subscription and download as much as I can, then stop until the next time I need to do so.
