- superkuh 2y agoMy 2001 self would be very happy to see the reach of the Echelon system reduced. Unfortunately the Five Eyes and the USA in particular no longer depend on the legal and law following Echelon systems and instead just intercept and spy on everything. Also, for what's worth, sorry Canada.
- EVa5I7bHFq9mnYK 2y agoWhat's there to spy? Everything is tls now.
- dudefeliciano 2y agoRarely has a post on a meme subreddit sent a chill down my spine, now i read this and i have to look back at it: https://www.reddit.com/r/NonCredibleDefense/comments/1i65bzq/is_this_credible_donald_trump_authorises_special/ https://www.reddit.com/r/NonCredibleDefense/comments/1i65bzq...
- bananapub 2y agothe least believable part of that is the US newspaper headlines criticising it, I think we all know the NYT would report is as "Trump embraces boisterous new foreign policy approach with Canada" as Ottawa burns.
- dudefeliciano 2y agothat and Scholz still being chancellor
- actionfromafar 2y agoMaybe just as good for Canada. This way, Canada won't have to explain to the US why Canada is holding out on the information all of a sudden. I'm sure there are conversations going on at the non-US 4 eyes of what to share and not to share since quite some time already. Take the UK with its stance on Russia. Why would it share its intel with the US, a Russian ally? It doesn't make any sense.
- delichon 2y agoAs an American I would envy Canadian citizens for having a government that doesn't participate in this particular international conspiracy to deny civil rights. Voluntarily would be better but I'd take the win.
- dudefeliciano 2y agothere is so much for an American to envy about Canada, not being part of an international intelligence alliance would be pretty far down the list for me
- bananapub 2y agoit is just astonishing that there are apparently ZERO republicans left who will even comment negatively on Trump just destroying the US's military, scientific, diplomatic and political domination of most of the world. I've long been a critic of much of US foreign policy and of the patheticness of my country in standing up to them when they're wrong, but this is just an insane incineration of 80 years of structural advantage for the US.
- dudefeliciano 2y agoThey've either been purged or know the consequences of speaking up. The main problem to me, is the growing disinterest and disillusion with democracy. People are retreating in their own bubbles of interest, in which talking about politics is a taboo. We are flooded with news showing the dismantling of systems we took for granted a decade ago. I am not saying that everyone should fight, or protest, or get involved in local politics. It's just that even the little effort/discomfort of talking politics, defending one's position (or even formulating a position), seems too much now. That is the death of democracy.
- bananapub 2y ago> They've either been purged or know the consequences of speaking up. this is the end of the game, if people don't speak up there won't be another opportunity to do so, so while I agree that Trump supporters threatening to murder Republican senators is bad, I also think it's catastrophically bad for Republican senators to be too fucking weak to say anything in such a situation.
- tromp 2y agoTime for the other Four Eyes to axe the unreliable fifth...
- sleepyguy 2y agoI believe the 5 Eyes system is more for the benefit of the USA than its other members. Is this a bad thing for Canada to be booted out? They still can maintain a relationship with the other members. I can't imagine what the rest of the West feels like, with friends like the USA, who need enemies.
- rich_sasha 2y agoHmm dunno, allegedly US intelligence specifically is one of the key NATO "enablers". But then, most of NATO is not in 5 eyes so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
- jmclnx 2y agoRate the US is going, it will be soon know as "1 Eye"
