Burning in woman's legs turned out to be slug parasites migrating to her brain
- bhaney 2y agoWelp, crossing Hawaii off the vacation destinations list
- quesera 2y ago> In 2017, there were 19 confirmed cases, but case totals in each of the years since have remained below 10. There are 1.4 million people who live in Hawaii and several hundred thousand who visit every month. So statistically, you're pretty safe. :)
- freeqaz 2y agoI grew up in Hawaii and this is the first time I've ever heard of this. There are lots of low-probability diseases like this out there. You're probably more likely to die on the car ride to/from the airport than something like this, statistically.
- bhaney 2y agoSure, but this would be on my mind every time I ate something there, and that would really ruin the experience. Like how a lot of people are scared of flying even though the drive to the airport is statistically more dangerous.
- quesera 2y agoI hear you. But the world is full of such statistically-nearly-impossible things. Don't swim in warm fresh water. Don't breathe in a dry building that might have mice. And if you really want to worry about million-times more likely concern: do not cross the street. Hawaii is lovely, and well worth a visit. I just wish it wasn't so strategically important and in such relative proximity to sketchy dictators on the other side of the ocean. :)
- anotherhue 2y agoAm I misreading things or is increasingly the case that LETTUCE is deadlier then undercooked meat? Is there a radiation treatment or similar for lettuce? Can it simply be washed thoroughly? I don't even like it.
- cafard 2y agoI like lettuce, even iceberg lettuce, but not at the cost of ingesting parasites.
- timeon 2y ago> even iceberg lettuce Even? Isn't it best lettuce?
- bhaney 2y agoObviously opinions vary, but a lot of people consider it to be one of the worst of common lettuce varieties. Like the Red Delicious apple, it's popular because it holds up well during transport and storage, not because it's particularly good.
- ars 2y agoIt tastes like water. Romaine is better.
- gnabgib 2y agoThe most dangerous of the lettuce https://veggieknowledge.com/was-romaine-lettuce-recalled/ https://veggieknowledge.com/was-romaine-lettuce-recalled/
- Pxtl 2y agoMost of the time the danger of lettuce is e-coli that's agricultural runoff from the animal industry, so ironically it's the meat making the veggies unsafe. Obviously this parasite is a different case but that's hardly typical. And after all, there's no guarantee it came from the lettuce and not from the seafood, as they say in the article.
- cute_boi 2y ago> he raw seafood and salads eaten in Hawai I don't understand people are stupid enough to eat raw sea food ... Even salads can be dangerous these days.
- giantg2 2y agoRaw seafood can be pretty safe if done correctly. What do you think is stupid about it?
- AYBABTME 2y agoThere's just probably a few billion people doing this regularly.
- ycombinatrix 2y agoSushi meat is generally flash frozen before consumption
- giantg2 2y agoNot just flash frozen but going through the parasite destruction protocol. I believe it's required in the US for all fish except tuna
- dekhn 2y agoraw seafood is typically caught, flash-frozen, then thawed. This is remarkably effective for a wide range of contaminants.

- emeril 2y ago[flagged]
- escapecharacter 2y agoIt's great to have more representation for Big Parasite!
- threeseed 2y agoBig Parasite, Neuralink and Tesla Optimus robots. I think Trump is cooking up something.
- kevin_thibedeau 2y agoCordiceps 2028
- freeqaz 2y agoGotta wash your salad! I know when traveling, a lot of people recommend using a produce washing agent. I was curious to look this up to see what they're doing. EcoLab has their safety data sheet published here[0]. You mix it with water and it contains: - Lactic Acid (reduces pH, likely killing some pathogens) - Sodium hydrogensulfate (also reduces pH) - Dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid, sodium salt (food safe surfactant to loosen microbes) 0: https://assets.pim.ecolab.com/media/Original/10085/US-Z8-913510-ANTIMICROBIAL%20FRUIT%20%20%20VEGETABLE%20TREATMENT.pdf https://assets.pim.ecolab.com/media/Original/10085/US-Z8-913...
- MathMonkeyMan 2y agoDodecylbenzenesulfonic acid is what makes Star San, the surface sanitizer used by many homebrewers, foamy. It's dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid and phosphoric acid.
- tim333 2y agoOr just not bother with salad!
- mjfl 2y agoMakes me want to take ivermectin every once in a while.
- proee 2y agoMost rat lung cases in Hawaii are on the Big Island. Not sure why this is but worth noting if you are traveling. Beware of raw produce at farmers markets and from small organic grocery stores.
- thrdbndndn 2y agoWow, this case sounds like something straight from House. > The worms migrate through the blood or along peripheral nerves How does a worm move along peripheral nerves, physically? Now that I think about it, I don't know exactly what a nerve is like. Is it hollow? Is it filled with fluid like blood vessels?
- gavmor 2y agoLooks like strings of neurons are bundled together like Cat5 cables, fed along the way by parallel blood vessels. It's not hard to imagine a thin multicellular organism undulating up these bundles, between strands or between sub-bundles. https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Brian-Ilfeld/publication/304365497/figure/fig1/AS:391303247482891@1470305372612/Peripheral-nerve-anatomy-image-courtesy-of-Myoscience.png https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Brian-Ilfeld/publicatio...
- dreamcompiler 2y agoI've wondered the same thing myself. The rabies virus takes the same route to the brain. Once it gets there, 99% of victims die. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rabies https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rabies
- tim333 2y agoHere's a nice photo of the human nervous system https://www.instagram.com/world_of_medics/p/C3cBEQShBTp/ https://www.instagram.com/world_of_medics/p/C3cBEQShBTp/ Chunkier looking than I'd expected.
- dtn 2y agoUgh. Rat lungworm. When I think of parasites, I always think of this story from a few years back: https://edition.cnn.com/2018/11/05/health/man-dies-after-eating-slug-on-dare/index.html https://edition.cnn.com/2018/11/05/health/man-dies-after-eat...
- OutOfHere 2y agoWhen eating out, especially when abroad, follow a simple rule: eat only what is fully cooked and is very hot. Don't eat anything that isn't cooked. This rules out sushi and salad both. Also don't eat snails, slugs, frogs, or other weird things that could have been insufficiently cooked. If you want to be thorough, carry an IR thermometer and a meat thermometer so you can test it.
- schneehertz 2y agoEat cooked meat and vegetables, drink boiled water, and avoid contact with wild water sources and wild animals. May parasites stay away from you.
- knowitnone 2y agothanks for the nightmares
- knowitnone 2y agothis is why I cook everything - even lettuce. Ok, not everything(fruits)
