El Salvador offers to jail 'American criminals,' including U.S. citizens
- k310 2y agohttps://archive.ph/JsB5j https://archive.ph/JsB5j In effect outsourcing prison jobs overseas. It's for a price, you know. And tariffs were about evil trade imbalance? It's good when I say it's good and bad when I say it's bad.
- quantified 2y ago> Tech billionaire Elon Musk quickly endorsed the Bukele offer, saying, “Great idea!!” So much for American (prison guard) jobs first? I look forward to the first batch of US citizen members of El Salvadoran prison gangs getting returned to the streets of USA.
- anovikov 2y agoProbably they will be imprisoned there for long enough so they are no longer dangerous once out. Or indefinitely.

- anovikov 2y agoThat had to be resolved somehow. All problem with crime in the US is not catching the criminals but that there are so many of them they can't be affordably imprisoned - and death penalty applied on machinegun scale is out of favour with the public. If El Salvador can provide an affordable solution that allows to imprison everyone who say, ever stole a catalytic convertor, for 20 years - that will be great!

- archagon 2y agoThat’s pretty fucked up. I’ll take a dozen thieves over a person willing to destroy someone’s life over a stolen bauble.
- anovikov 2y agoBut those thefts will quickly stop once people realise that you do it once - and you are out. That's the whole goal. Law enforcement is now toothless because just shooting hundreds of thousands per year is politically a no-no, and imprisoning them for any meaningful terms is too expensive. People complaining on "catch and release" don't get it - there's simply not yet a way to do much else. Saw those youtube videos where a dude sells stolen shit in the street and when confronted by a reporter, asks blatantly - "so... are they going to jail us... ALL?". And he has a point. It's not possible. That's why they are free doing it. For now.
