Apple sued for using dangerous "forever chemicals" in Watch bands

- yaiml 2y agoI used to wear sport watch rubber/resin bands (like G-Shocks) but am way more conscious nowadays and opt for metal band watches. At the same time, while I feel like the lawsuit may have a legit point there containing these harmful materials, if you buy a rubber-based wearable, you shouldn't be surprised that it may contain forever chemicals.

- yaiml 2y agoFair. When I grew up, most bottles were still glass based. Later, when plastic bottles were introduced, it didn't occur to me (or anyone I knew) that those might be harmful etc. Also, I don't worry about drinking out of plastic bottles occasionally when traveling and when it's convenient. Same with other things (I am typing this on a plastic keyboard, lol). It's all a matter of over-exposure though I think. 30-years ago it felt like 20% of things were plastic. Now it's like 90%. I am not crazy about avoiding all plastic but sure I think it's kind of common sense to avoid plastic containers for (esp hot) food, etc or things like rubber/plastic wearables that you wear like 24h a day.
- mdp2021 2y agoMore to a precise point: they are among those selling poisonous apparels («Wearing them next to the skin for prolonged periods...»), which is a devastating global phenomenon. To those who have not paid attention in the last years: "Do not touch coats" (from a newspaper, remarkable pinnacle of the farce); "This acquaintance says he bought cheap shoes, goes to the doctor, says he will have to use lenitives for the rest of his life as now his skin is full of toxins..."; "Went to the hospital for the rashes, they said to just ditch the shirt..."; "Bought that cheap underwear, had to take antibiotics..." (from acquaintances).
- mdp2021 2y ago#!@! snipers, as usual. HN needs a cultural revolution.
- opposition 2y agoThough, I’m not surprised about plastic containing PFAS, I had higher expectations of the offerings provided by Apple. Most consumers do not have the bandwidth to read papers, or skim through articles/news for every product they buy. Therefore, they indirectly assume, when choosing an expensive option, there’s been some assurance put into the product. As it looks like now, I would have been better off buying a watch band from AliExpress, rather than an expensive band from Apple/Nike..
