Liberux: Linux phone
- jqpabc123 2y agoEverything a potential user would want to know --- except the price. If you have to ask how much it costs, you're not going to like the answer.
- mckirk 2y agoAlright, I'll bite. How much does it cost?
- ajsnigrutin 2y agoYep. Also no "order here" button. Also, i'm making an even better phone.. with 64 gigs of ram! and 4tb of storage! And blackjack and hookers! Crowdfunding link >here<
- rUsHeYaFuBu 2y agoHow dooes this compare with the libre phone? https://puri.sm/products/liberty-phone/ https://puri.sm/products/liberty-phone/ Looks like liberux has some better specs at the expense of some core security features.
- WinstonSmith84 2y agoI suppose security and privacy have a cost - 2k USD for a phone with old specs ...
- rUsHeYaFuBu 2y agoDepends. That's the U.S. made version. So you're paying for U.S. labor. There's an $800 version too. Plus they offer anti-interdiction service as well.
- seba_dos1 2y agoAt this point, Liberty Phone / Librem 5 has an advantage of actually existing. We'll see what the future brings though :)
- wakawaka28 2y agoLibrem 5 is a well-documented scam. Some people have gotten phones but Purism has made most people wait for years with no delivery. The ship date always sounds just a couple of months out and they keep pushing it out. If you ask for a refund, they'll try to bullshit you various ways. It's been a couple of years since I washed my hands of them and had my bank force them to refund me. But I waited almost 2 years myself. When I did research, I found people who had been waiting for 5 years. The only people reliably getting the phones were social media influencers. I'm not about to try to order another one.
- seba_dos1 2y agoLibrem 5 caught massive delays, but eventually all of the phones had been produced and shipped to people who bought them and they've been available off-the-shelf for a good while now. While I'm not exactly happy with how some events around that project unfolded, it doesn't really fit my definition of a scam either, sorry.
- wakawaka28 2y agoI doubt everyone who ordered a phone got one, and a years-long delay is not acceptable if they put a ship date on their website of only a few months in the future. I found accounts of people who were told that the phone would ship imminently who were forced to wait 5 years and still didn't have the damn phone, and couldn't get a refund. Here's someone posting one month ago about their horrible experience: https://old.reddit.com/r/Purism/comments/1he60ub/purism_refund_policy_anyone_else_has_similar/ https://old.reddit.com/r/Purism/comments/1he60ub/purism_refu... Here's another thread: https://old.reddit.com/r/Purism/comments/1dkr086/is_purism_a_bit_scammy/ https://old.reddit.com/r/Purism/comments/1dkr086/is_purism_a... Several comments suggest reporting them to the FTC (a move I made myself!). Another one 10 months ago, someone not getting responses from them anymore: https://old.reddit.com/r/Purism/comments/1be3r74/still_silence/ https://old.reddit.com/r/Purism/comments/1be3r74/still_silen... I'm telling you it's a scam from first-hand experience. You can buy a Linux PinePhone for about $200, and that was available within a year of announcement and within a month of ordering, and it was announced after the $700 non-US Librem 5. I got one while waiting for the Librem 5. Now I know you're gonna say "But Purism has custom hardware, it's not the same..." But the fact is that they misled everyone and probably mismanaged their money. A "preorder" is not the same as an "investment" or "donation" and comes with concrete obligations. They lied over and over and I documented it all for my bank, to get the refund that Purism denied me. They literally told me I had to wait for my number to come up in line. If I trusted them to ever ship the phone, I might as well take the damn phone at that point. So sorry, you don't know what you're talking about. I don't take calling something a scam lightly, and I believe that the way Purism operated (if not the way they still operate) meets the definition.
- wakawaka28 2y agoThe Librem 5 sounds great on paper, if you can get one. I don't think your odds are good. People have prepaid orders going back up to 5+ years. Search Reddit /r/purism for the horror stories of impossibly long waits, refund denials, redefinition of "preorder" and all their other BS. Your best bet for an actual working Linux phone is a Pine Phone. But that doesn't have the same focus on security, and probably can't be as trustworthy as a standard Pixel running GrapheneOS or something. It definitely isn't as usable as one running a version of Android.
- skyyler 2y ago"mostly" open source?
- abound 2y agoI'm guessing there are a few proprietary binary blobs from vendors needed for components like the modem or similar.
- nurb 2y agoThat wording is worrying me as well, I hope its not a closed UI thing like Jolla did with sailfishOS...
- prmoustache 2y agoI think that rockship chip still need proprietary blobs in the kernel. It is very probable that the model chip is using proprietary blobs/drivers too. If this is the case, that doesn't make it less free than most laptops on which people install linux on.
- rjsw 2y agoThere is a blob for the Mali GPU that I think does some task scheduling stuff.
- Tepix 2y agoWhere's the link to their git repository? Having physical switches for various sensors sounds nice, as does 32GB of RAM. It would be more useful (for use with LLMs) if the SoC had an NPU.
- deleted 2y ago[deleted]
- Tepix 2y agoI think it does have an NPU with 6 TOPS

- arsome 2y agoSite has now turned into a wordpress installer?
- bhaney 2y agoNever thought about using a Wordpress installation wizard as a phone. Very avant-garde.

- flkiwi 2y agoImagine my surprise clicking the link and seeing a Wordpress installation screen.
- bilekas 2y agoWordpress installer hit.. definitely wasn't waiting for that!
- the__alchemist 2y agoBad link? It's giving me a walkthrough for installing WordPress.
- jdblair 2y agothe new rick rolling is wordpress installer?
- hn111 2y agoUpon opening the URL I got a Wordpress install wizard: https://liberux.net/wp-admin/install.php https://liberux.net/wp-admin/install.php Did the site crash/reset/got hacked?

- raddish2 2y agoCreated an account just to call this scam out: There's no way this is legit--could not find information on ANY of the people listed on the site. Backgrounds look like they are in a huge office, but in reality the address they show on their site appears to be a residential building, but the flat number they specify does NOT exist (in Spain the public Catastro lists not only buildings but also the layout of the buildings, and flat 1-D does not exist, it only has from 1-A up to 1-C, see: https://www.idealista.com/maps/madrid-madrid/avenida-betanzos/91/ https://www.idealista.com/maps/madrid-madrid/avenida-betanzo...). Also, they try to look professional and big (there appears to be a huge office with many people on it) but... this is crowdfunded? I'm calling bullshit here
- the__alchemist 2y agoA possible explanation is a design student's project for a portfolio, or a startup's obligatory fibs. I suspect your explanation is the most accurate of these.
- wakawaka28 2y agoIt might not be legit, but I think you are being too harsh. The second and higher floors of that building have D units. It is not uncommon for floors in buildings like that to be carbon copies. The D unit might just be commercial space and listed separately or not at all. The owner could have removed it from the listing because it was commercial, or maybe the owner of this thing also owns the building. Making a phone is not a poor man's passion project. Secondly, without knowing how they intend to implement this you can't really draw many conclusions. Startup companies don't need huge offices to start with and the manufacturing is almost always in Asia.
- tecleandor 2y agoFrom what I've seen in the records for the company, the D is not for the letter after 'C', but for "Derecha" (right). But anyway, this is a big Opus Dei family with bank businesses that registers their "phone business" in a cheap apartment of a simple neighborhood. Nothing against the neighborhood, I live near, but I think they're not coming as sincere to me.
- desertraven 2y agoNavigating to this websites prompts me to install wordpress? Unfortunately my installation attempt was unsuccessful.

- zzzeek 2y agowordpress is such a disaster
- markus_zhang 2y agoI am contemplating a simpler solution: dumb phone for daily drive + whatever low end smart phone for banking/authentication/corp shit. Much cheaper.
- gear54rus 2y agoSo go back to asking for directions on every corner or backtracking during the road trip, is that what you're saying? :) Throwing away progress is not the answer to fighting the corporate greed and device lockdowns.
- markus_zhang 2y agoAdd GPS to the second catalog and it's done. The key is not about corporate greed actually, as I'm sure my information is already in dozens of vendors DBs. It's about less distraction. So the smart phone is going to be as shitty as those corp apps allow.
- root-user 2y agoDid you know that you can swap SIM cards between devices? Or that there are dumbphones on the market that can still serve has 5G hotspots for companion devices? You are regarded!
- prmoustache 2y agoMost "dumb phones" are really low end smartphones running kaios (formerly Firefox OS). And yes they usually have wifi hotspot and usb tethering.
- rjsw 2y agoAnd maps. I am using one as a wifi hotspot right now.
- wakawaka28 2y agoJust get two smartphones. One running GrapheneOS and no Google apps for your personal stuff, and another stock Android phone strictly for things that demand a normie phone. The personal phone can be wifi-only, even a tablet. Some people have resorted to using special cellular WiFi hotspots to run their non-cellular device. You can run your calls through something like that. The CalyxOS foundation makes a WiFi hotspot like that, but I don't have one. That may be the ideal one. Maybe something can be done with Starlink but it's not as portable.

- stndef 2y agoI can't help, but get generated vibes from the photos of the team. It just might be the focus of the camera, alongside my lack of trust for any images I see online these days!
- bdndndndbve 2y agoI'm gonna say the people are real but they're green screened onto AI backgrounds. Although the man leaning on the pillar one is just uncanny for multiple reasons.
- Retr0id 2y agoAlso my first reaction, but I think they're just professional photos with stock-photo-esque set dressing. I think they're legit. Edit: backgrounds are stock photos: https://www.shutterstock.com/image-photo/young-man-using-technology-digital-tablet-1756312052 https://www.shutterstock.com/image-photo/young-man-using-tec...
- bArray 2y agoNote how the team member 'Pedro Echanove' has a mobile device on his screen with a physical keyboard. The desk in front of him doesn't have a chair. The team member 'Carlos Rodríguez' has a large screen on a desk behind his with lines of code, for what purpose? Maybe it's real, maybe it's just staged for the photo, but it could be hints towards some weirdness.
- prmoustache 2y agoI am pretty sure they took photos in front of a green screen as they are all working from home / have a shitty looking office. All the backgrounds look to come from a different, very generic place the same, so definitely generated.
- 243423443 2y agoThe images look weird. The faces are scary.

- billwear 2y agolooks like a trojan horse attack to me.
- wkat4242 2y agoPairing a RK3588s with 32GB RAM is a bit like lipstick on a pig. It's even the version with reduced NVMe bus
- neilalexander 2y agoHalf-serious question: what real use is there for 32GB RAM in this form factor with a low-power SoC?
- Cumpiler69 2y agoRunning Electron apps
- theden 2y agoWonder what the expected battery life is given the hardware (including it being x86)
- SchwKatze 2y agoIt's kind of sad, I thought the product was amazing, but after this incident with WP I lost a lot of my confidence in the project.

- Yoofie 2y agoPhysical Wifi/BLE/5G kill switches, but no SD card slot or audio jack? Odd choices.
- anonzzzies 2y agoPrice? Edit: Ah, it's starting at $2k. USBC has DP support (not sure how anyone is still making phones OR tablets without that, but here we are) I would buy this if it was done, but I have been bitten by crowdsourcing campaigns too many times to chance it.
- kan0r 2y agoOk, what the app store like? xeyes and freeciv?
- amyames 2y ago>including a jailed android no. I would only consider a Linux phone to get away from apple and google
- eigenspace 2y agoUnfortunately, the Linux phone I've been waiting for has to have a top-notch camera. So I'll sadly be waiting a long time unless I want to lug around an extra device just for photos.
- offbeatport 2y agoIs this not a good enough camera? Is the problem with the hardware or software?
- eigenspace 2y agoThe only thing they say about the camera is megapixel count for the single front and single rear camera. This is a very clear sign that the camera is an afterthought tacked onto the phone. I have zero faith in its hardware or software. I'm in a weird position where I definitely care enough about phone cameras that I make most of my phone purchasing positions based on the camera, but I also don't care so much about photography that I'd be willing to carry around a traditional bulky camera. I travel and hike a lot, and enjoy trying to take nice photos of beautiful things, so it's very important to me that the phone does a good job at that without encumbering me. Maybe for my next device I'll end up just switching to a Linux phone and then carrying around an iPhone or Android just for the camera and 2FA / banking apps.
- offbeatport 2y agoThanks, I think I can relate. For me, the camera gets more important as I get older. I realise that, althougth I'm not into photography either, it's very easy to capture day-to-day memories. However, I'm one of those people who would never buy a dedicated camera. I'm just not into it that much. I'm courious to see if the hardware would be OK. If so, how much more can we get by writing good software. After all, there's only so much we can improve with hardware until it becomes irrelevant!?
- eigenspace 2y agoYeah, software is a big part of this and can hopefully improve it. But it's also a huge undertaking. I strongly suspect that computational photograhy improvements make up a majority of Apple, Google, and Samsung's smartphone research spending. It's the main thing that drives sales of their most expensive phones. There's a gigantic amount of closed source research / development to catch up with. But also there's some important hardware features that just aren't possible to make up for in software (e.g. my 3x zoom camera module is really important to me).

- ognarb 2y agoThere are quite a few stock images on that website...
- robertlagrant 2y ago> NEXX’s software lifecycle is whatever you want to be Hard to know what this means.
- a2800276 2y agoI want it to receive regular updates for the reasonable lifetime of the product provide by the original manufacturer! Kazam!
- robertlagrant 2y agoBut, what if you want it for 20 years? Is someone going to toil away until every last user has said they don't want it any more?
- jokoon 2y agoAnother one, which is good. Although I am curious about general battery life. The single most problematic issue is obviously app availability, for example no access to classic dating apps. I have to admit it would be nice if Google could give access to their app store to those sorts of phones, but obviously they are never going to do that.
- offbeatport 2y agoI guess it's a vicious cycle with open / linux-based. Although not impossible, it's difficult to get good grade apps with slow capital. E.g. It seems to me that the appstore is one of the main arguments for choosing iPhones.
- dt3ft 2y agoLoving all the hardware switches.
- delusional 2y agoYou should really wait to share your project until you're done installing wordpress.
- a2800276 2y agoPossibly even have a product and not just renderings.
- Gualdrapo 2y agoSeems this got the hn hug of death (wp install screen after this was working?), but couldn't find any info about a 3.5 headphone jack, if it can get a micro sd card or if it battery is removable - because the linux phone I've been waiting for has all of those three.
- eigenspace 2y agoSeems to be back up now. The website says it has a 3.5mm jack, microSD and a removable battery.
- intelcoders 2y agowebsite is fucked https://ibb.co/2YkpxkQ https://ibb.co/2YkpxkQ
