69% of Stanford applicants with perfect SAT scores didn't get in (2013)
- Simon_O_Rourke 2y agoIn fairness there's got to be something off about anyone with a perfect SAT score.
- bell-cot 2y agoSounds like SAT scores are a pretty poor metric, for Stanford's purposes. Are they sticking with the SAT just as a way to game their US News rankings? Because of some regulatory or contraction obligation? Ivy-encrusted tradition?
- seanmcdirmid 2y agoThey stick with the SAT because different high schools are difficult to compare based on GPA alone. There was an article about it awhile back where getting rid of standardized tests actually hurt the students they were trying to reach, rather than help.
- bell-cot 2y agoThen they should switch to one which better differentiates their applicants. The SAT ain't the world's only standardized test.
- seanmcdirmid 2y agoIn the USA, there is just the SAT and ACT for undergrad admissions. Yes, they could switch to the gaokao, but then all incoming undergraduates would need to learn Chinese first.
- xqcgrek2 2y agoThe SAT is just way too easy in the modern era. It needs to be rescaled so that the number of people attaining a perfect score is in the single digits per year.
- ahazred8ta 2y agoAn 800 single score is supposed to be 3 sigma above average, about 1 person out of every 740. There are just about a thousand people with 1600 scores every year, out of 2 million test takers. This is the way it's supposed to work.
