While I'm not eager to engage the topic, I'm curious why was it flagged. Does anyone know?
- aspenmayer 2y agoIt was actually a different Reuters article/url which was posted to HN, and then flagged: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42541269 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42541269 The current OP is from a month or so ago, whereas the linked article in the HN post above is from yesterday. They're both worth reading and are in the same series of articles from Reuters, and neither should be flagged imo, though I think the latest article, about the origins of the site, is of more relevance to HN generally.
- nkurz 2y agoI presume you are right that the previous article was flagged, but today's article was also killed by flags. Unless there was a dupe, it was flagged and dead when I found it on hckrnews.com. I "vouched" for it to bring it back alive because I thought it was a solid article that was worthy of discussion. As to why it was flagged, it's always hard to say. A combination of people who think it's a hit piece, those who think it's too accepting of porn in general, and those who think it's simply inappropriate for a work oriented tech site. And possibly some people who simply don't want to see evidence that this particular problem exists. I vouched for it because I think it's good for porn consumers to contemplate whether their behavior is enabling abusers like the one described here. If you are going to watch porn, at least choose performers who are clearly happy to be doing what they are doing and thus less likely to be forced to do so against their will! WarOnPrivacy: You should be able to read comments on dead article if you turn on "showdead" in your profile (click your name on the top right of the page).
- aspenmayer 2y agoIt’s also possible that there was a duplicate post of OP, which would explain the ambiguity as well. My point was not to exclude any flagged post of OP, or to say that one is more deserving of not being flagged than the other, as I agree with you that the entire OF series that Reuters has been running is worth reading and any or all of them belong on HN, imo. I also have vouched for both posts. Thanks to you and others who have used to moderation functions available to them to help (re)surface these worthwhile posts.
- WarOnPrivacy 2y ago> You should be able to read comments on dead article Showdead is already on but there's no discussion option on some dead articles. For those articles, the full set of options is: | flag | vouch | hide | past
- nkurz 2y agoHmm. You are right that there is no ability to add a comment to an article once it's dead, but you should be able to view all the comments that are there. If I recall correctly, this one had about 15 upvotes but no comments when I vouched for it. I'm wondering you looked at it just before this. If this was the case, you're right that you weren't able to see any comments, but this isn't because it was flagged, but because there weren't any comments to see yet. Here's a sample article to test on: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42549691 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42549691. It's flagged dead, but has two comments that I see when I follow the link. And here's one to show what it looks like when there is a flagged dead post without any comments: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42555040 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42555040.
- WarOnPrivacy 2y agoThe dead Reuters had a bunch of upvotes and I assumed it had comments. But with no way in, I couldn't be sure.
- anonym29 2y agoI'm speculating here, not asserting this as ground truth, but I get the impression that HN generally likes to avoid sexual/NSFW content, even if it is simply discussions involving those topics, and not simply gratuitous depictions. I suspect a lot of folks use HN at work and just want to err on the side of caution for what they have on their work computers.
- lcnPylGDnU4H9OF 2y agoI didn’t flag it but I can’t help but notice how the stories are of awful abusers and their victims while somehow the article puts the blame for their suffering on OnlyFans. The tone and the subtext seem to suggest that it is somehow OnlyFans who is causing women to be “deceived, drugged, terrorized and sexually enslaved” rather than the people who are perpetrating the actual deceiving, drugging, terrorizing, and sexual enslavement. (Why name the service OnlyFans but not the abuser who poured hot oil on their victim’s back?)
- baobabKoodaa 2y ago> Why name the service OnlyFans but not the abuser who poured hot oil on their victim’s back? This is false. The article does name the abuser.
- kergonath 2y agoJust look at the other comments: any time someone mentions sex, somehow people get stupid. I think the flags come from at least two directions: those who are opposed to anything sexual, and those who are fed up with the cess pits these stories become on HN. It’s a shame these things cannot be discussed here, but at the same time this is probably not the best demographics for this kind of topics. Now that I write it, I will probably be wrong, but I don’t expect this story to remain on the front page for long.
