US-based ultra runner arrested in India for carrying Garmin InReach
- cdot2 2y agoWhy are satellite communications banned in these countries?
- nradov 2y agoIt's the usual government incompetence and paranoia. They're afraid that people will use satellite communications to coordinate protests or violence. India has routinely cut off Internet and cellular access in some regions. https://www.dw.com/en/india-internet-shutdown-capital-of-the-world/a-64997062 https://www.dw.com/en/india-internet-shutdown-capital-of-the...
- nradov 2y agoIt will be interesting to see how the Indian authorities react now that every new cell phone is a satellite communications terminal.
- helge9210 2y agoLike Israel did 15 years ago with Kindle/iPads: upon arrival you give up your device for "safekeeping" and pick it up as you leave the country.
- xhkkffbf 2y agoSo the presumption is that the device is illegal because it allows communications?
- RegnisGnaw 2y agoThe device is illegal because the government deems satellite communication to be illegal. Like Starlink is illegal in India.
- RegnisGnaw 2y agoSuch a B.S. statement from her: "I was not aware a GPS device was illegal" This has nothing to do with GPS, she's just saying GPS to gain sympathy. It the satellite communications. The article is even dumb, who writes these things: "Small, rugged and lightweight, this satellite communicator enables two-way text messaging using GPS technology, even in areas with no cell coverage." GPS is one way technology, how does GPS allow two way text messaging?
- runnr_az 2y agoIt was a Garmin InReach device... ... and there's no reason random visitors would assume that's illegal.
- RegnisGnaw 2y agoI know it was an InReach, I just find the article B.S. by saying the issue was the GPS not the Satellite communication. Or you can have two way text messaging via GPS.
