I think the world would have been much better off if AI research were banned from the start. This is the sort of nightmare that capitalism breeds: take the short-term gains regardlesss of the long-term consequences and deal with the consequences later. And I find it ironic that scientists are the ones saying this when they are responsible for helping create it in the first place. It's absolutely maddening and ridiculous. We could all end this right now by just destroying AI, if only we were more logical and united like the Amish.

My big problem with these grand proclaimations is that AI hasn't done jack shit. It hasn't displaced workers, it hasn't created sources of accountability when things go wrong, and it hasn't created real value. The assumption that a glorified autocorrect can replace all thought work is stupid from the start, and it's not getting any more credible as time goes by. The real triumph of AI was it's marketing; Sam Altman and friends really made everyone believe AI was a world changing technology just because he gave the world free AI. It's like the Library of Babel as applied to real life - what kind of demented moron would spend their lives hitting "Retry" on ChatGPT when they could use their brain and just solve the problem?
- vouaobrasil 2y agoIt has already displaced some workers, for sure. At least one suicide could possibly be linked to AI. And it will continue to disrupt society and waste needless energy as well.
