PSA: The Kagi search engine directly funds Yandex –- and refuses to stop
- akutlay 2y agoPeople seem pissed in that Reddit thread, kind of shocking for them to take such a big risk and say “we don’t discriminate based on geopolitical issues”. Yandex is clearly not an independent startup in Russia.
- hellcow 2y agoThis is really disappointing. Vlad, it’s not a “geopolitical issue.” You’re directly funding—even a small amount—the extermination of the Ukrainian people. Please stop. — A family plan ultimate subscriber
- beepbooptheory 2y agoAren't they either way funding an extermination, in a small amount, by paying USA taxes right now?
- NotYourLawyer 2y agoDid you forget which side the US is on?
- beepbooptheory 2y ago...which side of the world? What do you mean? Edit: sorry, pre-coffee reply. I am not referring to Ukraine here.
- NotYourLawyer 2y agoIsrael defending itself != extermination.
- aguaviva 2y agoMany Germans thought they were simply defending their country against external threats during its final genocidal adventure, also.
- NotYourLawyer 2y agoWait did you just equate the Israelis to the Nazis?? Anyway this isn’t some vague “external threat.” They were attacked. They have the right to fight back.
- aguaviva 2y agoWait did you just equate the Israelis to the Nazis?? No. They have the right to fight back. That's not the point.
- dns_snek 2y agoActively attacking civilian targets != Defending itself
- PrivacyDingus 2y agoand yet the woke international courts and NGOs are calling it a genocide
- DougN7 2y agoPeople opposed to the war are getting drafted and sent in whether they like it or not, and getting killed. It’s a tragedy for both sides.
- DougN7 2y agoI don’t know if that is true. Not all Russian people (or even a majority?) are in favor of the war. But they still need to eat.
- madhacker 2y agoIf those Yandex engineers should want to come to America, Silicon Valley would be happy to take them and ignore any previous affiliation as long there's money to be made.
- ksec 2y agoI thought most of the Yandex office and engineers moved out of Russia before the ban or sanctions. Effectively Yandex is no longer a Russian entity ? And does Kagi pay Yandex to use their image search ? If not does it / would it still matter?

- nunez 2y agoI see Vlad's point but this is a very bad look. Territory war/ethnic cleansing != geopolitical issues. They need to drop Yandex. I, too, am reconsidering my subscription.
- dttze 2y agoReaffirms my sub. Happy they arent bowing to hypocritical western clowns.
- drewbitt 2y agoYandex has been used in Kagi for years, and this was even posted about previously. I guess the knowledge faded into obscurity, and new people just weren’t aware of it. I think Yandex is a decent search engine at times—at least it finds results that others don’t—so I can see why Kagi would use it to enhance their results.
