I'd also like to quibble with this assertion the author makes at the end of the article:

This is very much not true. Subtractive and FM synthesis are still very widely used.
- ncr100 2y agoDigitone 2 ($1k USD) just released this quarter, has a strong FM synth in a package with a few other rad synthesizers + killer sequencer.
