Reading Lord of the Rings Aloud
- bityard 2y agoBefore we were married (and I suppose after), my wife and I shared a love of LoTR. At the time, we were doing a fair amount of driving on the weekends to see family and friends. Rather than buy an audiobook, we decided it would be a good idea for whichever one of us was the passenger to read it out loud. In retrospect, that was a mistake. :) We didn't get into any accidents but we had to stop... Tolkien's style of writing is just perfect for putting you asleep when you're not well rested and already somewhat bored by the drive itself.
- dekhn 2y agoI read the Hobbit, LotR, and all of the Silmarillion to my daughter when she was growing up. I'd read about an hour a night and often fall asleep while reading. I skipped the songs- sounded funny to read them. My daughter asked why I was tearing up/choking up while reading "Ainulindalë" (the first chapter) and I told her "you have to understand... this is my origin story... it's like Genesis, but better" """There was Eru, the One, who in Arda is called Iluvatar; and he made first the Ainur, the Holy Ones, that were the offspring of his thought, and they were with him before aught else was made. And he spoke to them, propounding to them themes of music; and they sang before him, and he was glad. But for a long while they sang only each alone, or but few together, while the rest hearkened; for each comprehended only that part of the mind of Iluvatar from which he came, and in the understanding of their brethren they grew but slowly. Yet ever as they listened they came to deeper understanding, and increased in unison and harmony."""
