Lessons from USAF Brutalism
- robotnikman 2y agoAs a software engineer who also likes military aircraft, I really enjoyed this article.
- graycat 2y agoI fall for a click-bait Web page title and then have to fight off various overlays and popups, maybe change the window size to see the 'X' to close some popup, then get some long, nearly irrelevant and worthless, content with no connection to the title, .... So, now, fool me again, and shame on me, so I do what is necessary to close the window, leave the Web site, even if I have to kill my Web browser to do it. Ah, Darwin will fix it! Besides, looks like help for the Web site of my startup -- no popups, no overlays, no cookies, no distracting, interrupting, legalistic warming about cookies, e.g., I'm given an advantage!
- taspeotis 2y agoI have uBlock Origin and I see no such things. Are you rawdogging the internet without an ad blocker?
- graycat 2y agoThanks! Have delayed all extra software from wanting a trusted source and concerned that might get some system management problems. Just found https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ublock-origin/ It's via Mozilla so maybe is as safe as the rest of Firefox, JavaScript, or whatever it uses, etc. Thanks!
- LargoLasskhyfv 2y agoYou should look into the homepage linked from there https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock because that's were it's really from, and not some recommendation via. Especially their Wiki, because that contains really useful information, how to handle more advanced stuff, which can't really be done 'automagically' for all sorts of websites. Maybe even their reddit also linked from the mozilla site, though I'm guessing you're not fond of the latter. You could also consider using https://librewolf.net/ https://librewolf.net/ instead of Firefox, because that's built and delivered with much desired settings, while the undesired stuff is left out. Which you'd have otherwise to setup manually, put together piece-wise from countless different places, because there is no place who has it all. By the way, they have their own redddit, too. Which leads to less hassle with system management problems. Not to speak of being delivered with uBlock Origin out of the box. Works really well for me, and I'm picky, because I've grown bored with systems management problems, too ;)
- graycat 2y agoThanks! On a frustating day I call some of the system management problems "mud wrestling", or, due to lack of good documentation, just throw it up against the wall a dozen different ways to see what seems to stick -- and with that nonsense hope to be running a reliable server???? Yup, "chaotic world".
- TaterTots 2y agoI can’t believe someone wrote about the WPAFB museum and didn’t mention the Avrocar. There is a true moment of history in that museum though. You can stand on the exact spot where LBJ was sworn in as President after the JFK assassination, on JFK’s Air Force 1.
- moralestapia 2y agoWhat a great article, thanks.
- hnbear 2y agoI love seeing articles where someone clearly really loves something and has thought deeply about it, internalized all the lessons, and then gone out of their way to share it all in detail. The Airforce museum in Dayton is amazing. We stopped off there on a roadtrip and after the entrance exhibit and the first hanger my wife said how great it was and how much she'd enjoyed it. Then I told her about the next 3 hangers. It's huge. Really, really huge. There are giant planes that seem tiny in the hangers and take up just a small bit of each. You can walk through or sit in a lot of them, and quite a few have their histories and are significant aircraft. Then after seeing everything my kids loved the simulator which is a full 5-point harness, can roll a full 360 degree style one. You could hear their screams of joy/fear as they flew around. They loved it so much I had to fly it with them, several times to make sure they'd really enjoyed it as much as I did.
