The main reason for the growth of self scan was loss control (theft reduction). Most theft from stores is by staff not customers. Removing the human from the till reduced the theft. This worked for several years, until customers worked out how easy it was to steal from self service checkouts. Now self checkouts don’t have the loss reduction benefit they are being phased out.
- SapporoChris 2y agoI have no issue with self scan. However, I also like the stores that have a clerk scan the items and then the customer goes to an automated teller machine that takes credit card and cash for payment. I think the latter method helps solve both issues.
- Bluestein 2y agoI think several modes should be available, including one where you pick, leave items to your name (against existing credit perhaps) and walk away, items shipped to you later ... ... and everything in between.-

Employees have known they will be disciplined and fired for being short on cash for decades, even if an accident. Second, an employee’s overhead cost is bigger than the small amounts they might try to steal. Saving hundreds a day is the goal of implementing these machines.
- sjducb 2y agoEver considered Do you want a receipt? No Cancel Sale Remove cash from drawer later. There are so many ways a person can steal from the till.
