The $16K Humanoid Robot Leaping into Production [video]
- throwthrowuknow 2y agoOh great, a robot that can take a punch and then beat me to death with a stick.
- ceritium 2y agocan that iron and fold clothes?
- hansoolo 2y agoWould you pay 16k for that?
- seanmcdirmid 2y agoYes. If it can iron and fold clothes, then it can probably do the dishes as well. $16K is a good price point for that, $30k would even work. But i'm not sure it can really do all of that yet.
- me_me_me 2y agohmmm, probably not worth it. If you hire a house cleaner 3 days a week for 3 hours for every week of a year. That should keep your house in near pristine condition. That's around 450 hours a year. Pay them $20, thats $9000 a year. Probably waaaay more hours than you would need at way over the market rate, and still cheaper. Those robots probably break often too and still are hard to fix. And are not flexible in terms of tasks (only flexible when the work)
- seanmcdirmid 2y ago> Pay them $20, thats $9000 a year. No idea where you live, but no, housekeepers aren't that cheap anymore.
- me_me_me 2y agoDublin Ireland, one of most expensive cities in eu (sadly) Cost per hour is around €15
- seanmcdirmid 2y agoI live in Seattle, and you’ll be lucky to get someone for $49/hour. Obviously labor is more dear here, so the robot prices make more economic sense.
- me_me_me 2y agoHow much does a Private Housekeeper make in Seattle, Washington? As of Aug 20, 2024, the average hourly pay for a Private Housekeeper in Seattle is $18.92 an hour. Private Housekeeper Salary in Seattle, WA - ZipRecruiter

- sottol 2y agoBy capturing off-shored manufacturing of Western companies, Chinese companies have acquired some decent "basic" manufacturing know-how/quality at unbeatable prices, often resulting in finished components that are lower-cost than locally sourced raw materials here. The second-order effect is that other companies can then build on those cheap basic components and integrate into something higher-tech. Initially usually some sort of cheaper knock-off of some idea but constantly improving it while keeping cost cheaper than the Western competitors, reinvesting most of the proceeds into continued development. Eventually the product stands out in its own right and the manufacturer becomes world-class in its niche. I've seen this a couple times - DJI or Bambu Labs to some degree are imo examples of this, Unitree seems to be another example.
- Incipient 2y agoIt definitely feels China is well beyond "basic" manufacturing. "global leader" is probably it. Even in fairly nascent industries local industries - cars - they're pretty much up there with the best, at a significantly lower price.
- donclark 2y agoCan it replicate itself if given the materials/components? And how much would that cost?
