It's hard to believe they did user testing and this design came out on top. Take a person at the end of their shift, sit then in front of a 'steering a ship' game with this UI: "with the controls set this way, which way will the ship move?" "we showed you a UI for 1s, were the props ganged? What was the differential in engine output?". Presumably the US Navy has the user testing sessions recorded and archived somewhere?
