Iranian banks hit by major cyber attack
- Workaccount2 2y agoI'm inclined to think that this must be a state sponsored attack, yet I wonder the about the value of pissing off the public. Seems like it would just help to galvanize support of the Iranian government.
- throw310822 2y agoIsrael is doing anything it can to provoke a response from Iran- then it'll turn back to the West and demand more money, weapons and diplomatic support to "defend itself".

- woodruffw 2y agoIran's government is, in fact, openly antisemitic[1]. This doesn't mean the average Iranian is antisemitic, or that all criticism of Israel is. - mdgrech23 2y agoIs criticizing the current genocide also anti-semetic? Because that's what happening.
- exe34 2y agoWhat does genocide mean in this context? Are you referring to information provided by Hamas? Or information that the UN repeats on behalf of Hamas?
- equilibrium 2y agoFirst remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.

- exe34 2y agoHave you considered an ophthalmologist? I'm not qualified to give medical advice.
- woodruffw 2y ago> Is criticizing the current genocide also anti-semetic? No. Did I say that?
- zo1 2y agoIf you're phrasing the entire situation as a genocide, then arguably yes, because you're doing it to the detriment of the Jewish people and arguably on purpose because the word and it's application here is gooey and not straightforward. Why didn't we call the US invasion of Iraq extermination, or occupation, or bullying, or or or. Heck, there have been actual Genocide events around the world, and we only 50/50 end up defining them as such. But hey, the one with the most control over feelings and the media is the one that defines the situation. It's optics and marketing, and we all know why people are trying to coalesce around the word "genocide" because it has the most amount of impact, even though it's arguably not correct and also correct in some other ways. So it forces us to sit here debating it, instead of helping the innocent people on the ground. But no one will ask "hey, let's just resettle the entire Palestinian population." or "Hey, lets get all the children out of this conflict zone, and then we can have the debate.".
- aguaviva 2y agoBut no one will ask "hey, let's just resettle the entire Palestinian population." Are you suggesting this is a viable course of action to take? I'm genuinely unsure of how to read the intent behind this snippet.
- throw310822 2y agoThat was an ultra-conservative prime minister 18 years ago. Not enough to call "the government" antisemitic, in general and all the time.
- exe34 2y agoI think funding Hamas and supplying them with weapons, given their actions on October 7th, counts as antisemitic. Hamas has one purpose.
- throw834928 2y agoI wonder what that makes Netanyahu https://www.timesofisrael.com/for-years-netanyahu-propped-up-hamas-now-its-blown-up-in-our-faces/ https://www.timesofisrael.com/for-years-netanyahu-propped-up...
- exe34 2y agoso if they cut aid from Hamas, it's genocide, open air prison, etc, but if they provide humanitarian support before Hamas attacks them, it's their own fault?
- woodruffw 2y agoKhamenei has been the supreme leader for over three decades at this point, and has left a very long trail of Holocaust denial and "elders of Zion"-type public statements behind him. I don't think it's a stretch to infer that Iran's governmental views extend in no small part from his personal views. Again: this isn't a blanket characterization of the people of Iran, and it's not an assumption that Iran's government will always be antisemitic.

- AnimalMuppet 2y agoThat cuts both ways. Iran has also doing plenty to provoke Israel, for years - though they mostly do it through proxies. (But chanting "Death to Israel" at the inauguration of their president? That is not a benign, neutral act.)
- zo1 2y agoIt's very clear that the "1st World" nations are adamant about destroying themselves by importing the third world, and it's also very clear that places like Russia, Israel, and China are not. Not to put the three in the same "bucket" or make them equal, but they are just some prime examples of countries that are valuing and defending themselves and their own citizens above others. Until the day comes when my people, my culture, and my race are treated equally to others, that's the day I'll become a proud citizen of the "World" and Humanity. Until then, I'll fight for my own existence and my own people.
- throw310822 2y agoThey do provoke each other, sure. However Israel is the only one that gets solidarity when the other hits back. Btw, "death to" is a mistranslation- in Persian it just means "down with". The American comedy "Down with love" is translated in Iran as "death to love".
- exe34 2y agoDid they also supply guns to a terrorist organisation in the comedy?

- zug_zug 2y agoThe article certainly paints it in that light. I also agree that it isn't clear to me how stealing information from private citizens would be a justified response for ongoing tensions in the region. Not sure why you're downvoted.
- infecto 2y agoI could see a scenario where states like Israel could see a benefit to provoke. Impossible to say for sure but I can at least see a possibility.
- erie 2y agoThey are denying it : Central Bank: No bank has been hacked According to Mashreq, the Central Bank Media's Twitter account wrote: Rumors of the enemy media to prevent the fall of the dollar / no system has been hacked. https://www.mashreghnews.ir/news/1633345/بانک-مرکزی-هیچ-بانکی-هک-نشده-است https://www.mashreghnews.ir/news/1633345/بانک-مرکزی-هیچ-بانک...
- curiousllama 2y agoWildly speculating - could this be a response to Iran trying to hack both presidential campaigns? https://www.wired.com/story/iran-apt42-trump-biden-harris-phishing-targeting/ https://www.wired.com/story/iran-apt42-trump-biden-harris-ph... "Google says Iran-backed hacking group APT42 has targeted the Trump and Biden campaigns, as well as Israeli military, government, and diplomatic organizations"
- underlogic 2y agoThat was my first thought. It's a clear signal from the US to stop interfering
- underdeserver 2y agoTwitter seems to think that the only source for this is Iran International, and there's been no corroboration, so take with a grain of salt.
- meiraleal 2y agoThanks. I will first take any twitter source with double amount of salt.
- xander158 2y agoIt was reported as fake news. Someone taped a piece of paper to an ATM and suddenly its the largest cyber attack in history.
- sandworm101 2y agoI don't see that even a real attack taking out every ATM in Iran would qualify as the largest anything in history. There aren't enough ATMs in the country.
- woodruffw 2y agoThe phrasing could be bad, given that it's a (likely) ESL source: they might mean it's one of the largest cyberattacks on Iran in history. (I don't have a factual opinion on the claim, only that this phrasing interpretation seems possible to me.)

- epgui 2y agoAdding to other commenters' skepticism, I'm not sure this even makes sense. I'm not an expert, but I know that regular people don't have accounts with the central bank, and I know central banks aren't responsible for operating ATMs. If there was a link between the two (eg.: interbank lending issues), it would need explaining, and I feel like it would be covered in financial news (Bloomberg, FT, etc). There's either a lot of important detail missing, or this was written by someone who doesn't know how banking works.
- andyjohnson0 2y agoNo mention of this on NYT/BBC/Guardian sites. Fake?
- bamboozled 2y ago[flagged]
- roydivision 2y agoCan you give us a couple of examples?
- bamboozled 2y agoTheir one sided coverage of the Gaza conflict for a start. Go look at the front page today. It’s so one sided actually wonder who is funding the paper now, Qatar ? Absolutely zero balanced reporting there. They have a lot of sensationalist “climate crisis” articles too. I see the guardian as being a “social justice warrior publication” where they are so keen to dish out justice, they exaggerate far to much. They use reporting as a way to try sway people’s views, that’s not good journalism, and often leads to bias reporting. There is so much left leaning content in there I need to always go read other sources just to come back to reality / found out more, and often the guardian hyped something up. The mpox story from today is another example of that, they write: “Outbreak resembles early days of HIV, say experts, urging accelerated access to vaccines and testing” Early days of HIV? What ?
- tharmas 2y agoI hope this is sarcasm.
- andyjohnson0 2y agoNo it's not.

- switch007 2y agoI don't find an Israeli source very convincing, given Iran is a belligerent in the 40 year proxy war against Israel.
- aa_is_op 2y agoThe source of this article is just two sentences from a Saudi-based outlet: https://www.iranintl.com/202408144740 https://www.iranintl.com/202408144740
