Elon Musk should face arrest if he incited UK rioters, says ex-Twitter chief

- dekhn 2y agoI struggle to understand the legal ideas behind how this would work.
- beardyw 2y agoPresumably by issuing an arrest warrant and requesting extradition. It happens a lot.
- dekhn 2y agoDoes the United States extradict American citizens to england on a regular basis for laws not broken in the US? I'm just struggling... I don't think Musk broke any US laws, and it seems unlikely the US is going to send Musk over to England for expressing opinions not based on fact? Or is it because he's the owner of Twitter, and Twitter served the post up to UK citizens within UK, presumably using front ends hosted in England? Basicaly I'm confused about how laws can be applied extra-terrorially especially if you think through all the possibilities aboiut how somebody posting in a First Amendment country could have posts shown in a repressive country.
- beardyw 2y ago> Does the United States extradict American citizens to england There would be no reason for extradition otherwise. See here https://uk.usembassy.gov/our-relationship/policy-history/the-u-s-uk-extradition-treaty/#:~:text=The%20Treaty%20modernized%20the%20extradition,information%20on%20that%20treaty%20below https://uk.usembassy.gov/our-relationship/policy-history/the.... We are talking about handfulls, but they do happen.
- beardyw 2y agoWhen I said it happens a lot I was referring to extradition generally. Not always successfully though.
- dekhn 2y agoOK, so it seems likely that while the UK metro police chief can say this, and even try to extradict some folks, it's unlikely the US is going to hand somebody over for shitposting that might be illegal in the UK.
- beardyw 2y agoExtradition can take a long time - see Julian Assange. He didn't commit a crime on American soil as far as I know, but the US tried very hard to get hold of him. But set foot on the soil and the arrest warrant would be served.
