It has a name: The Bekenstein bound

(...granted, that's if you don't care about access-times)
- LASR 2y agoSomewhat off-topic, but it blows me away every time it's brought up that the amount of information you can store in a volume scales by the surface area covering that volume and not the volume itself.
- Dylan16807 2y agoEven wilder is that the amount of matter you can fit in there to store that information scales by the radius.
- The_Colonel 2y agoThat is indeed surprising. Is there ELI5?
- ben_w 2y ago(I think it's the radius not the area?) ELI5: Information can only be stored on energy (mass/light etc.), and the limit for how much energy you can get in a certain volume before it becomes a black hole happens to be proportional to the radius.
- dzhiurgis 2y agoChatGPT says it's about 2.24*10^20 exabytes for an microSD card
