> Pancreatitis, or inflammation of the pancreatitis, occurred at a rate of about 5 cases per 1,000 users of semaglutide and 8 cases per 1,000 users of liraglutide. The condition causes severe abdominal pain and, in some cases, requires hospitalization and surgery.
> Gastroparesis was seen at a rate of about 10 cases per 1,000 semaglutide users and 7 cases per 1,000 liraglutide users. The condition, which can be difficult to treat, causes severe nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
Meanwhile, obesity increases your odds of getting any number of debilitating diseases[1] and reduces life expectancy by 5-20 years. I think for many people this is a no-brainer.

- prepend 2y agoYou don’t need to imagine it. 60% of the US is overweight or obese. People have weaknesses and want to compensate. Imagine calling out people below the poverty line for being “weak-willed” that they choose not to work harder or smarter. People can’t make the right choices for many reasons and that’s a weakness. That’s being human. The question is how to help with that as telling people “stop sucking” doesn’t seem to be a good intervention.
- hnbad 2y agoAlso, here's a thought: if 60% of people are "too weak-willed" maybe it's not a question of being weak-willed alone. That's more than half. In other words, if you pick a person at random, they're more likely to be "too weak-willed" than not. Fat acceptance is, to a point, mostly a distraction from underlying problems. But fat shaming isn't helping, never has helped and won't fix any of those problems.
- bloqs 2y agoIf the world were this simple addiction treatment would simply not exist. It very often starts as a result of unresolved neuroticism stemming from trauma, and damage or underdevelopment of the prefrontal cortex (responsible for executive function, like planning and acting on plans), essentially the food/drug/bad habit quiets the negative emotion throes that occur without warning or control. The random component causes the person to compulsively engage in the quieting behaviour, which dopaminergically reinforces itself. Or: - Try and eat nothing but vitamin supplements, water and oats - stop using all of your favourite technological devices -cease all sexual activity for a month straight, starting tomorrow if you want to see what it feels like.
- orwin 2y agoYou're talking about the mind here, but hunger has a somatic component that those kind of privation cannot emulate. I can go on two week hikes where i do mostly what you say, but fasting for 5 days had me feel like dying on the second (once the pain pass and you can sleep, the following days are easy and you can ignore hunger). Or to say it another way, a more impersonnel one: much like nicotine and alcohol, food addiction isn't just psychologic but also somatic (unlike sex, sport, videogames, probably other). The issue with food addiction is that you cannot avoid food like you avoid alcohol and tobacco: you _have_ to eat to survive. Which make discourse like GP's "use your willpower!" as dumb as HAES', or maybe even more.
- orwin 2y agoYou just don't understand. Hunger is painful. I used to feel physical pain when not eating "enough". I managed to reset my hormonal balance by fasting for a week: the second day was the most pain i ever felt, and i broke my leg and my ankle on within 10 minutes of each other, 2 hours away from the nearest hospital, without painkiller. Still, the feeling of hunger during my first fast was worse. I think it's because i broke my leg and had to endure that pain that i was then able to endure the hunger, but i was miserable, and was only able to do it because i had time (57 days per year of vacation) to prepare my fast and do it (also, a big half of my extended familly work in the medical sectors, nurse, PT and doctors especially, and their advices helped me prepare for it). I'm now fasting for 5 days every year and it's easy, i feel the hunger but not the stomach cramps or any physical pain. And eat usual amount of food and i am not obese (i'm under 25 BMI for the first time in 12 years), but if i knew about ozempic i'm pretty sure i would have used it instead of powering through it.
- solardev 2y agoWhy does it matter how they do it? If diet and exercise work for you, great, you have more willpower than most, and will hopefully be healthier and more successful because of it. But that strategy doesn't work for millions of people, and I don't know that they deserve to die because of it. If a miracle drug can help them despite their weak will... that sounds awesome?
- dang 2y agoCould you please stop posting unsubstantive comments and flamebait? You've unfortunately been doing it repeatedly. It's not what this site is for, and destroys what it is for. - treprinum 2y agoThose are early data. In 5 years the picture will be more accurate. I'd try Tonalin/CLA, forskolin or berberine before Ozempic. Some people take Ozempic for 3 years before developing pancreatitis and the drug is still too new to have long-term safety data.
- toomuchtodo 2y agoEli Lilly's "triple G" aka retatrutide also in play. https://www.reuters.com/business/healthcare-pharmaceuticals/lilly-experimental-triple-g-obesity-drug-leads-242-weight-loss-trial-nejm-2023-06-26/ https://www.reuters.com/business/healthcare-pharmaceuticals/...
- gcr 2y agoWhen thinking about these reddit horror stories, I'd also note that many of these gastrointestinal problems can be solved or lessened by more reddit folk knowledge. For example, r/tirzepatide recommends taking regular dietary fiber gummies to ease intestinal problems.
