“The spacecraft could be grounded for months” is questionable coming from an unnamed source.
The relevant paragraph from SpaceX's statement reads: “This event is a reminder of how technically challenging spaceflight is. To date, we have completed 364 successful Falcon launches – safely carrying astronauts, customer payloads and thousands of Starlink satellites to orbit – making the Falcon family of rockets one of the most reliable in the world. SpaceX will perform a full investigation in coordination with the FAA, determine root cause, and make corrective actions to ensure the success of future missions. With a robust satellite and rocket production capability, and a high launch cadence, we’re positioned to rapidly recover and continue our pace as the world’s most active launch services provider.”
So, even saying “Live Science's sister site Space.com reported” is pretty misleading vs, you know, “according to SpaceX's statement”.
- FireBeyond 2y agoI don't know that SpaceX's statement dispels anything, though. The unknown part is the length of the investigation, which isn't addressed there. The known part is that the Falcon -is- grounded until the investigation is complete.
- cwillu 2y agoAnd as it turns out, the winning answer is “10 days”, given the launch scheduled for tomorrow and the press release saying they've finished the investigation and have already implemented and tested the fix. https://www.spacex.com/launches/mission/?missionId=sl-10-9 https://www.spacex.com/launches/mission/?missionId=sl-10-9 https://www.spacex.com/updates/#falcon-9-returns-to-flight https://www.spacex.com/updates/#falcon-9-returns-to-flight
