People will only realize once it's too late how valuable access to physical, offline media truly is. The streaming services get worse every year, and even if internet bandwidth weren't a concern, I've seen some movies disappear from even Rental services once they go behind yet-another-company-streaming-silo.
- shrimp_emoji 2y agoIt's called torrenting.
- SkyPuncher 2y agoIt’s entertainment. We’re flooded in other options now. Everything is so transient because there’s something new to replace it immediately.
- A4ET8a8uTh0 2y agoI have been telling people personal library ( that includes dvds and blurarys ) is what they are needing now -- either physical or in media server form. But those that want/need it, have it or have plans for it. I know I started buying more dvds/blurays lately.
- Kon-Peki 2y agoI live in a very affluent area and the local public library has a very large section dedicated to DVDs and Blu-ray (and video games and music CDs). And given that all the libraries in the area are linked up, I can request discs from an absolutely massive collection.

- hombre_fatal 2y agoIdk, I think physical media always only appealed, and still only appeals to a few people. I used to use Redbox when I visited my parents since they had no streaming services. But now they do. And I'm sure that having to pick a physical movie from whatever wasn't already consumed by someone else, and then having to remember to return it, isn't an experience that's making many people think "man physical media is truly valuable" compared to scrolling hundreds of shows at home. It seems just like an HN pipedream. In reality there are more shows than I will ever care to watch.
- mingus88 2y agoMy daughter loves a show that was put out on Disney+. It had superb production value, wonderfully casted and was based on a series of books that we read together over the course of a few years. It disappeared from the service. They never released it on Blu-ray. It’s gone forever. That’s a part of her childhood which we can never revisit. It’s tragic, really.
- jauntywundrkind 2y agoPart of what was so good about Red Box was it's already at the places you go anyways. It felt logical to me that my supermarket had a small self contained but sizable-catalog of media. I'm all in on this connected age, but it still seems not great that we centralized and consolidate this world ever upwards into massive virtual services. Having local options is something I want my world to have.
