It doesn't require root. You can read it before you run.
- whalesalad 2y ago"reading before you run" eliminates all convenience of the one liner. Their linux docs are way better because it shows you exactly how to do it on a per-distribution basis. when it comes time to update the software I would prefer to know how exactly it is installed so that I can update it correctly.
- rad_gruchalski 2y ago> when it comes time to update the software I would prefer to know how exactly it is installed so that I can update it correctly Then read the script you complain about.
- whalesalad 2y agoThree months from now I won't remember using the script to install it. And the contents of the script could completely change. This is not a helpful take.
- rad_gruchalski 2y agoThis is not a helpful take for you. The same method works fine for me over the last decade. Taking notes helps, having some helper scripts helps. If one’s invested in a technology, one finds a way to remember.
- ericjmorey 2y agoYou just described how the script is less convenient to meet the preferences of the commenter you replied to. A debian package relieves them of the overhead you describe by having a few people do the work for anyone else that uses the package.
- rad_gruchalski 2y agoDebian packages are often old. Hence people found a way around. > You just described how the script is less convenient to meet the preferences of the commenter you replied to. Well… no. The person I reply to doesn’t say anything about preferences. They want to know how to update the software, the script is the best reference.
- shrimp_emoji 2y ago> Debian packages are often old. What about AUR or Fedora packages? ;D
- rad_gruchalski 2y agoNo clue man. Don’t use any of it.
- whalesalad 2y agoI am glad to hear you have room in your life to tend to idiosyncracies like this.
- rad_gruchalski 2y agoIt’s part of the job. That’s one of the things I’m paid for.
- whalesalad 2y agoPaid to screw around with your editor installation? Or paid to edit code.
- rad_gruchalski 2y agoYou know nothing about what I do. Keep editing code. You just grind on an infrastructure brought to you on a silver plate? Like an editor is the only thing we have fuck around with. That script for the editor is code, too…
- whalesalad 2y agoI do it all brother. Infrastructure is the fun/easy part.
- fragmede 2y agoI find organizing and saving files to disk is a great way to save things I won't remember. Maybe you could try that?
- deepsun 2y agoI do it from time to time, but it's time-consuming (proper install scripts are long), defeating the whole goal of "one-line installer". With proper installers I never read it's install scripts.
