- drivingmenuts 2y agoWell, iTerm2 definitely has that option (at least now it does - not sure about past versions) and every time I see an announcement for some sort of terminal software, I seem to recall they are touting their ability to use the GPU to render. I understand why the iTerm2 makers thought AI would be a good addition (not using that, either) but didn't know why GPU rendering was a thing. I've turned off GPU rendering - originally because I wasn't sure why it was needed so I didn't turn it on. Now that I see some explanation - I'n still not turning it on - I don't need it.
- d3Xt3r 2y agoNot OP, but there are many others which use the GPU specifically, such as Alacritty, Kitty, Warp, Ghostty to name a few off the top-of-my-head. It seems like pretty much every new terminal emulator that's coming out these days focus on GPU rendering.
- wruza 2y agoInteresting, I remember (u?)xterm being screen tearing fast at the Athlon times. Wondering what changed since then, cause blitting glyphs onto a surface at 60-144 fps wasn’t a big deal even then. Modern terminals feel like dot matrix printers compared to it, but I always assumed it’s because of using GtkTextView or something like that for rendering. Requiring a GPU and not just some form of direct-blit API is something insane to me.
