Debian 13 will mount /tmp as tmpfs

- lkdfjlkdfjlg 2y agoAs someone who's not an expert in linux or computers (I'm just a user, I don't really understand the internals of linux), does this mean or not that more RAM will be used?
- dekken_ 2y agoit means some of your RAM will be used as if it were a disk, for the files in /tmp I'm sure it's optional, or at least hope it is, cause it might not be good in all contexts
- shrimp_emoji 2y agoIf you have 8 GBs of RAM (or, for some reason, less) and have to compile Node/Rust/Go projects, it's a no-Go. But then Debian doesn't have the AUR, so you're probably good. :p (On Arch, I had to undo what Debian is now doing on a laptop I have since updating some AUR packages would fail from lack of RAM. Now, they succeed and only take an hour!)
- juancn 2y agoIt will use mostly unused ram for tmp files, but if it doesn't fit, the swap manager will swap it out to disk (think of a ramdisk with swapping). This means that is should work a lot faster for typical workloads and that data in `/tmp` will automatically be cleared on reboot. In theory it shouldn't affect anyone much, unless you have swapping disabled (which by default you won't).

- crtasm 2y agoThere was a huge thread within the last couple days: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40578414 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40578414 Have there been developments since then?
- elpocko 2y agoIrrelevant. The community decided which thread was more interesting, and it wasn't the one with fewer upvotes. You can downvote if you don't agree. That's what downvotes are for. At least put a link to the other thread, or put a mark on the post that shows that its ranking was manipulated against the community's will. I'm not here to see a list of dang's favorite posts. This is unacceptable.
- crtasm 2y agoBut.. the link to the other thread was already here when you made your post. I don't see any way to downvote a submission.
