Stop the autoconf insanity. Why we need a new build system (2003)
- MissTake 2y agoFrom 2003.
- h2odragon 2y agoThe problems haven't gotten better since then

- account42 2y agoNo, instead we have a whole heap of alternatives all with their own bs.
- hulitu 2y agoMy favourite is CMake. "We are better than make but we use make". /s And yes, setting CFLAGS in a CMake project is an exercise in masochism.
- shrimp_emoji 2y agoCMake does not compete with Make. :p It's a layer on top of Make (which is way better than directly using Make), and it can also use Ninja, MSVC, etc.
- high_na_euv 2y agoIt is unreal that it reflects my experience 21 years later

- darthrupert 2y agoGood thing we have had such s thing for some time: Rust and Cargo. It's quite incredible how the C world never got there, even after the example Cargo set.
- hulitu 2y agoNightly error. I'm still waiting to be able to compile Mozilla myself.
- shrimp_emoji 2y agoHey, that's remote dependencies, right? Give those a miss (we can't be trusted with them as a species -- think IoT crap; same thing); keep Cargo's UX, and you have pure gold compared to the horrors of CMake.
- icedchai 2y agoI used to think my problems with autoconf were just me.
- thesnide 2y agoAnd now, 21 years later we are in another insanity https://xkcd.com/927/ https://xkcd.com/927/
