In summary, you must opt-out if you want to exclude your data from global models.
Incredibly confusing language since they also vaguely state that "data will not leak across workspaces".
Use tools that cannot leak data not "will not".
- creativeSlumber 2y agowhat is the difference between "will not" and "cannot" in legalese?
- glennericksen 2y ago"Will not" allows the existence of a bridge but it's not on your route and you say you're not going to go over it. "Cannot" is the absence of a bridge or the ability to cross it.
- gketuma 2y agoWow, well explained.
- purplejacket 2y agoMy off leash dog will not bite you, he is well behaved. My dog at home cannot bite you, he is too far away.
- semitones 2y agoAren't all tools, essentially, just one API call away from "leaking data"?
- kepano 2y agoIn this case they mean leak into the global model — so no. You can have sovereignty of your data if you use an open protocol like IRC or Matrix, or a self-hosted tool like Zulip, Mattermost, Rocket Chat, etc
- mvkel 2y agoMost, if not all SaaS software is multi-tenant, so we've been living in the "will not" world for decades now.
- zeckalpha 2y agoIn your experience.
- mvkel 2y agoThe SaaS business model breaks if you go single tenant except in Fortune 500 enterprise
- 2024throwaway 2y agoIn your experience. I have deployed single tenant SaaS for years, very much not Fortune 500. It's really not hard to give each customer their own server.
- kepano 2y agoThat's exactly my point. "File over app"[1] is just as relevant for businesses as it is for individuals — if you don't want your data to be used for training, then take sovereignty of it. [1] https://stephango.com/file-over-app https://stephango.com/file-over-app
- lxgr 2y ago"File over app" is a good way of putting it! Something strange is happening on your blog, fwiw: Bookmarking it via command + D flips the color scheme to "night mode" – is that intentional?
- kepano 2y agoAh good catch. Yes the "D" key can be used to switch light/dark mode, but I didn't account for the bookmark shortcut. That should be fixed now. Thanks!
