Essential Things to Do After Installing Ubuntu 23.04 Lunar Lobster
- Tepix 2y agoUpdate to 24.04?
- timoteostewart 2y agoArticle seems clearly about 23.04, which is indeed Lunar Lobster.[0][1] [0] https://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/lunar/ https://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/lunar/ [1] https://canonical.com/blog/canonical-releases-ubuntu-23-04-lunar-lobster https://canonical.com/blog/canonical-releases-ubuntu-23-04-l... By contrast, 24.04 is Noble Numbat. https://canonical.com/blog/canonical-releases-ubuntu-24-04-noble-numbat https://canonical.com/blog/canonical-releases-ubuntu-24-04-n...
- 01HNNWZ0MV43FF 2y agoI think GP is asking, why bother with 23.04 when 23.10 and 24.04 are both out
- timoteostewart 2y agoI bet you’re right. I missed the snark.
- linhns 2y agoShould be rule of thumb. I never use odd numbered Ubuntu versions
- 000ooo000 2y agoBoring listicle. Don't bother reading. >6. Install VLC Yawn

- loloquwowndueo 2y agoSurprised “disable snaps” didn’t make the list …
- constantcrying 2y agoUbuntu is build around snaps. Might as well tell a Windows user to disable running random installers downloaded from the web. Makes the OS mostly unusable.
- pbhjpbhj 2y agoI use Kubuntu, with snaps disabled, seems to all work fine. But I have been looking for a distro that's not using snaps -- they've just been a buggy mess for me and the apps I've used that installed that way were all broken. MX Linux is looking good for when Canonical finally double down and make every installed binary have its own mount point. FWIW, I use WinGetUI to install from MS/Chocolatey sources rather than going off finding installers when using Win10 too. (Though it's a terrible UX compared to `aptitude`, imo.)
- timbit42 2y agoI use Linux Mint and install KDE Plasma.
- constantcrying 2y agoWhy would you do that? It's clear canonical wants you to use snaps, there are actually distros near identical to Ubuntu whose developers aren't hellbent on you using snaps. Do whatever you want, it just seems bizarre to me that you would go to lengths disabling snaps when you could just use a distro without them.
- pbhjpbhj 2y agoI'm embedded, simple. Changing distro is a big thing after maybe 18 years. It was easier to disable, so far, than it was to fix the apps that failed as snaps. But, I intend to move, when Canonical go all in on snaps and 'disable' just turning them off. I'm suspecting 24.04 might be that point. But it was delayed and I've not had chance to check it out yet. In some ways the distro is like a part of my identity; it's a personal decision, not a business decision as I'm a home user only now.

- johnea 2y agoFirst thing to do on a new ubuntu computer: Insert archlinux install USB stick and reboot! Firends don't let friends run ubuntu...
- kkfx 2y agoNot an Ubuntu user since many years (NixOS) but... 2. Nautilus expanded folder view for me sounds like a NO THANKS, for start in 2024 dealing with files and folders in manually crafted taxonomies instead of search&narrow it's a nonsense. In limited situations might be useful but definitively NOT int this way. This seems to be another RH-mania like the old Gnome Spatial View where for every folder Nautilus opened a new windows... 6. VLC have some nice features but... mpv is more gnomeish and mplayer still works pretty well... So VLC for me is definitively a nice piece of software but not that essential... 7. about this VERY BASIC damn modern GUIs IPC, that's copy/cut/paste well... Gnome is PURE DAMN CRAP. There is no damns reason not to have primary selection enabled by default, middle button emulation on by default, and no damn crappy GTk stuff that impede comfortable copy and paste for those who are not trained like the CRAPPY Windows limited and limiting default behavior, it's another very annoying nonsense like the aforementioned Nautilus UI stuff. 8. personally I use zfs/ZnapZend to manage my LAN backups, I generally advise my users against most "easy GUIs to do backups" because they tend to manage data their ways witch might be comfy if anything goes as planned but a nightmare otherwise. For those who can't use zfs, can't use Unison at least do use rsync and a filesystem who support snapshots... 10. BleachBit works well enough, some others (no experience with Ubuntu Cleaner) tend to be damn limited... Better train users to avoid delete too much with bleachbit but still being able to clean enough... PS If I have to use Ubuntu my first thing to do is get rid of Snap.
