I still think it's crucial to recognize OpenAI's impact on the field, because without them ChatGPT wouldn't exist and it's unlikely any other organization would have developed such advanced LLMs so early (or even released them for free). It's easier to come second and release stuff for free to appear "generous".
- KaiserPro 2y ago> ChatGPT wouldn't exist I don't think thats actually the case. OpenAI were ahead, but they weren't engineering in isolation. The building blocks were out there, but openai managed to put them together first.
- mdrzn 2y agoThat's why I said I don't think anyone else would have started training and releasing free models UNLESS ChatGPT existed and had success, and only OpenAI managed to do so.
- beepbooptheory 2y agoWhy is this crucial?
- mdrzn 2y agoBecause it's easy to forget that fact, and pretend that Meta is "better" than OpenAI when in reality they are late to the game and are trying to catch up to commoditize their product's complement.
