I'm very sympathetic to the message, but I do find it ironic that two seconds after I read this line:
> I now want you to go on Facebook, scroll down, and see how quickly you hit an advertisement.
An advertisement for the author's newsletter popped up.
- snakeyjake 3y agoYou don't understand. Corporate ads are bad and indeeeeeee ads are ok because they're, like, indeeeee. Now you know why the ghouls are downvoting you.
- llamaimperative 3y agoYou don’t think there’s at least a minor difference between an ad that directly pertains to the content you are directly reading, and is in fact from the same “vendor,” versus an ad piped in from an auction driven by your browsing behavior from all over the internet?
- snakeyjake 3y agoI do not. Ads are ads.
- llamaimperative 3y agoOkay, well most people who have issues with digital advertising don’t have as much a problem with ads as they have a problem with the negative externalities of how ads are currently implemented on the web. It sounds like you might have a bit of an extreme view. As evidenced by lack of general public outrage over e.g. advertisements in magazines or newspapers.
- snakeyjake 3y ago>It sounds like you might have a bit of an extreme view. That is indeed what most people would think.

I'm sure he runs ads all over social media, because that's literally the only way you as a writer (or any creative really) can foster a following to monetize the work you want to do.
- nradov 3y agoReally? Writers literally never develop a following through word-of-mouth? It's all advertising?
- ToucanLoucan 3y agoHow do you suspect word of mouth operates when you're starting from the natural number of followers one will have at the beginning, which is zero?
- edzitron 3y agoI don't run ads on social media for this newsletter. What're you talking about? Seriously, show me a screenshot of the ad.
- DHPersonal 3y agoIt's definitely a valid point, but at least the ad is made specifically for the site being visited. The article seems to be referencing the ads that are for other products or services outside of the site being visited.

- edzitron 3y agohi! I'm the author of the newsletter. I have run ads for this newsletter on one place (Garbage Day, a tech newsletter). In the last week Facebook has sent me 261 visitors. What're you talking about?
- edzitron 3y agoSorry, I may have misread this - are you saying that it's "advertising" that my newsletter has a pop-up asking you to subscribe?
- rideontime 3y agoed i love you but i hate those popup ads on your blog. i already subscribe and just can't be bothered to go through a three step process involving an email to log in each time
