I would argue that /var is kinda explicitly for writing stuff to, so I would mount a tmpfs overlay on top of it as a more durable solution than mounting tmpfs on explicit directories inside it. In fact, I am interested in how the procedure in this article compares to just slapping a tmpfs overlay on top of the whole system? Could be interesting to compare.
