Linux VServer: A soft partitioning concept based on Security Contexts (2018)
- mschuster91 3y agoOh, the predecessor of Docker. I remember a bunch of cheap "VPS" hosters in ~2010 using this under the hood, noticeable because they'd regularly reboot for kernel upgrades. Haven't seen it in ages though, not since the beginning of the rise of Docker and the "modern" cloud aka AWS EC2.
- betaby 3y agoYes. This or Virtuozzo ( later open sourced as OpenVZ)
- betaby 3y agoI was using Linux VServer container technology from 2004 to 2017. Served me well.
- solarkraft 3y agoHey, that's interesting. I've rented various "VServer" products in the past and always assumed that it meant I got a VM. Definitely behaved a lot like one! It's interesting that they used what we now call container technology (namespacing) well before that concept was popular (AFAIK, I haven't been around for so long). It's also notable that it's considered good enough for multi-tenant use, which, as far as I'm aware, is typically advised against for containers nowadays.
