Cisco Acquires Splunk
- ketralnis 3y agoI'm sure this will have no effect on the price of this famously expensive product
- gordon_freeman 3y agoIt may get more expensive in the future. ;)
- ikiris 3y agoI'm not sure even Cisco is up to the challenge of making Splunk more expensive
- mysterydip 3y agoI'm sure they can make becoming a Cisco Certified Splunk Architect more expensive, though.
- ikiris 3y agothis is a very fair point. I forgot they could make an entire academy around new certs.
- notatoad 3y agonow it will be expensive, and require you take a course to learn how to correctly buy a licence.
- jf 3y agoMy favorite joke about this acquisition: Cisco bought Splunk because it was cheaper than their license renewal

- TylerE 3y agoWhere's the joke? I don't see a joke.
- blinded 3y agoThe joke here is that splunks services are costly.
- carbocation 3y ago(You replied to a meta-joke.)
- fknorangesite 3y agoWell, you're goin' 1-for-2 here.
- blinded 3y agoI see ha! Thanks
- gnicholas 3y agoWasn't this announced [1] several months ago? Was there concern that the transaction wouldn't go through because of antitrust or other issues, such that this new announcement of the closing would be newsworthy? 1: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-09-21/cisco-to-buy-splunk-for-157-a-share-in-28-billion-deal https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-09-21/cisco-to-...
- c0balt 3y agoIt's likely newsworthy for Splunk customers/ partners. Though I'd expect a bit of a delay before customer-facing changes start rolling out.
- TylerE 3y agoFrom the linked page: "Press release: Cisco closes acquisition of Splunk On March 18, 2024, Cisco completed the acquisition of Splunk. Get more information in the official press release." Sounds like the deal has in fact closed.

- Timothee 3y agoIf an admin passes along, it would be worthwhile to change the title to "Cisco closes acquisition of Splunk".
- altairprime 3y agoConsider emailing them - the footer contact link will reach them in just a few minutes.
- swyx 3y agolots of snide comments about how expensive splunk is, can anyone provide illustrative numbers vs alternatives, for the uninitiated?
- runjake 3y agoSplunk was obscenely expensive when we got a quote a number of years ago. I was expecting very high but if I recall correctly, it was an order of magnitude greater than that. Unfortunately, Graylog seems to be taking their post-OSS playbook from Splunk as well. Also interested in non-insane competition.
- tekla 3y agoTake a number that you would describe as "holy fucking shit". Add a 0 to that.
- ikiris 3y agopossibly more 0s
- polski-g 3y agoYou can buy a splunk license, or you can hire an engineer dedicated to administrating opensearch, but you're paying either way.
- _8j50 3y agoFor a long time, $1000/GB at ingest time per day was their thing but they've since gotten more flexible but their pricing is still in the millions for terabytes while the competition charges the same for petabytes.
- preinheimer 3y agoI loved splunk when I worked somewhere a VC was paying the bill. For my own project I could never really understand which of their various offerings was the one I needed, let alone could afford. That said, watching someone really good with splunk use it is like music. It’s beautiful.

- _8j50 3y agoCribl, created by former splunk guys is undercutting them. Elastic's eql is finally close to comparable to SPL3 and then you have graylog improving (also by former splunk guys). So it is indeed a good time to sell. Their stock is inflated because for the past 10+ yrs they were so good, it was hard to even compare them with anyone else. People who think kibana, solr (or any lucene based stack) was comparable have no idea how powerful splunk is. But they're just not coming up with competitive features anymore or adapting better pricing models. Their execs can't wrap their heads around having real competitiin and I don't think that'll change with Cisco. Cribl helps you reduce the data you ingest into splunk or even avoid splunk entirely. Really nice support for federated search as well (why isn't splunk doing this??).
