I think so - I grew up in a very alcohol-loving part of the US and attended a party school on an athletic scholarship. I am physically attractive and have lots of male friends, so I don't think I'm socially defective. I simply spent every moment when I could have been socializing with women alone in my room because being sober around drunk people is uncomfortable. There are very real, human consequences to temperance advocacy.
- polishdude20 3y agoYeah I can see that. I've had a few moments sober around drunk people and it can be tiring. But it depends on how drunk they are I guess. If it's enough drinks just to be a bit more chatty, I'm all for it.

- givemeethekeys 3y ago> being sober around drunk people is uncomfortable I don't drink either. I do go to bars all the time and am sober around drunk people all the time. A few tips, in-case you (or someone else) decides to embrace the discomfort: - Order something non-alcoholic at the bar. Depending on where you live, the bartender will either give it to you for free or very cheap. They'll assume that you are the party's designated driver, and everyone loves the designated driver ;). As a side effect, you'll fit in much more with a drink in your hand, even if it is a non-alcoholic one. - Get out of your head, and just start talking to people. Say hi if you make eye contact. Compliment someone if you like their dress. This takes some practice, but doing this as soon as you get to a bar, or even outside the bar if you're in line, will transform your experience to a much, much better one. - Warm up a bit at home (like a gym warmup) to some music. Your body will move much better and you won't feel like you're so off beat if you do decide to dance when you go to the bar. It really isn't bad. Just imagine all those drunk people need the drink to loosen up, and you, with a bit of practice can do it without a lick of alcohol! As a bonus, if you're male, you'll be better in bed sober than drunk.
- ackd 3y agoLike I said in other comments, my post is supposed to repudiate the presupposition that quitting alcohol is a priori desireable. I’m fine!

- the_third_wave 3y agoSo find some spot where you meet people who are as sobre as you are in social settings instead of one where alcohol is the norm. Join a church or something similar, one where they keep to the bit where it says "thou shallst not get whacked" but go easy on the god hammer. Assuming that you're not pleased with the current status quo - and that seems to be a given from what you wrote here - some form of action is needed to break out of it. Bluto from "Animal House" would advice you to "start drinking heavily" but that is sure to have its negatives as well. Either embrace your temperance and notice that those people managed to procreate as well (which implies boy did meet girl) or, well, have a beer next time and see where it takes you.
