Palworld fans concerned after Nintendo issues surprise takedown
- artninja1988 3y agoNow that Palworld has had huge commercial success, maybe nintendo will think twice before bullying them around like they do with those who can't defend themselves. At least that's my hope
- coffeebeqn 3y agoI don’t know enough about Japan’s legal system. Both companies are based there
- citizenpaul 3y agoI have mixed feelings about it. While I'm not opposed to Nintendo a known ligation bully getting a bloody nose. I also think back and probably 95% of the game companies I liked have shut their doors except Nintendo. Seems like the games business is rather tough to stick it out long term. Not only are they still out their making their IP content but also keeping the quality up. Its a pretty rare thing and I don't think the world would be a better place if Nintendo went out of business. They are pretty much the only company making video game content that is accessible and enjoyable across all ages groups. Not only that but they are the only company I can think of (I'm sure there are a couple others) that has resisted the overall pressure to succumb to sex and violence content to make more money. (mostly) I mean look at palworld its basically pokemon with violence. No I don't count Disney as wholesome content creators.
- ronsor 3y agoNo one needs Nintendo to go out of business. We need them to stay in their lane.
- citizenpaul 3y agoThats what I said. I'm also just waxing on how hard the business is. If there are 1000 pokemon clones available it does whether you want to admit it or not dilute the value of their IP franchise. If there is pokemon at $50 and mokemon at $20 lots of parents that spend for their kids are just going to pick the cheaper option. Nintendo as I was saying, has made strong commitments to maintaining the quality and accessibility of their products. In a business this competitive I and you don't really know where the appropriate line is from litigation bully to just staying in business as far as law goes.
- ronsor 3y ago"Litigation bullying" should be seen as anticompetitive and abuse of the court system, and should be punished with fines for such. Nintendo is still free to pursue normal marketing avenues, emphasizing the quality and value of their offerings, just like any company does in a free market. They are not entitled to any value, outside of what is set out in copyright and trademark law.
- WhereIsTheTruth 3y agoIf you don't police or enforce your trademark, you can loose it What you do is just FUD at this point, some actors want a easy piece of the Nintendo cake Valve just recently did the same, yet I don't hear people complaining "Valve lawyers sent out emails to Dota 2 custom game creators asking them to stop all monetization by August 17th." - https://twitter.com/thexpaw/status/1687518511189430272 https://twitter.com/thexpaw/status/1687518511189430272 https://www.resetera.com/threads/fan-projects-portal-64-and-team-fortress-source-2-have-been-taken-down-by-valve.804093/ https://www.resetera.com/threads/fan-projects-portal-64-and-... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AzKXXkXW9w https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AzKXXkXW9w
- tomalbrc 3y agoThe title is very irritating considering this is about a T-Shirt. Article itself is a pure puff piece
- phone8675309 3y agoIt's clickbait, pure and simple
- Aeolun 3y agoHaving played palworld, it’s just too different from Pokemon. I feel like Nintendo would have a really hard time going after them for anything other than ‘this looks to much like pokemon in general’. And most people would respond to that with “sucks to be you”.
- me_me_me 3y agoespecially since pokemon is a rip off too. They probably dont want to risk opening that can of worms.
- ShamelessC 3y agoHas this story even been vetted? Kind of looks like classic Reddit bs. Further, a _fan-made_ _shirt_ is the subject of the takedown? What?
- boomboomsubban 3y agoIt's mildly interesting to know the bot/low paid worker Nintendo uses to search for bootleg merch thinks the character was Pikachu, but I doubt this was a meaningful move.
- Waterluvian 3y agoPalworld confuses me because it just seems to be one of those soulless “let’s just mash together mechanics from six popular games” but it actually seems to work and come out as greater than the sum of its parts. It’s weird for Nintendo to fixate because it’s only like 1/6th Pokémon…
- voidfunc 3y agoI think it works because there's a lot of games out there that just miss the perfect mark slightly and so if someone picks up on that and smashes them all together it works out great. Game companies seem to suck at reading feedback about their games and adapting.
- Natsu 3y agoIt really does have its own thing going on even if there are bits of a ton of popular games visibly influencing it.
- monero-xmr 3y agoI don't play video games but have many friends that do. My take is that Pal World is a game Nintendo should have made, but has been lazy with pokemon IP and has let it stagnate. Maybe this will encourage them to make the MMO everyone wants with pokemon IP.
- ccakes 3y agoNintendo has said before that there'll never be a Pokemon MMO, not out of laziness rather by design. They want people to meet up irl to play and trade. The lack of options to "finish" Pokemon games without trading with someone is a feature, not a bug
- effingwewt 3y agoNo,it's pure laziness and has been since the gameboy days. They don't want people to trade they want people to buy both games. JFC Nintendo even sells them as pairs without a single cent off the price for buying both games at once. People were mad at the split between red and blue. Yellow came along as an apology but still had to buy another game (yellow). When the N64 came out we thought for sure we'd get a legitimate pokemon game...we got snap and arena. Nintendo and Gamefreak have known for decades what players wanted and they couldn't care less. Every new iteration is an asset flip with power creep. I stopped after black/white since it was obvious we'd never see a real pokemon game. We had fan made MMOs that were amazing but chose quite stupidly to add microtransactions. Still they were hugely popular. Companies bully and buy out competition so they never have to please their audience and keep stringing them along and no company personifies that attitude more than Nintendo and gamefreak. I truly hope this is the year of comeuppance for companies who want us beholden to them instead of the other way around. The entire world is fucking backwards.
- Eduard 3y ago> Palworld fans concerned after Nintendo issues surprise takedown that's a clickbait title. "Palworld fans concerned after Nintendo issues surprise takedown of fan-made merchandise" is better.
