Its pretty obvious from all the ribbon cables, there's quite a bit of orgitecture in addition to architecture going on here. I imagine each cable represents a different team at Apple working on a different chunk of the device. The whole is greater than the sum its parts for sure, but it definitely could've been reduced to fewer PCBs. I'm sure Steve Jobs would've thrown V1 into a fish tank and yelled at a few managers until the thing was 200 grams lighter.
