Related, I am not sure how to teach a toddler to call 911.
My cell is locked and I'm not giving them the pin or face.
Without a land line I am considering an exterior alarm wired to an inside panic button. In the evert I collapse from choking on a banana slug what does my toddler do? So far the I instructions are to ring the trusted neighbors.
- kallistisoft 3y agoOn some Android phones pressing the power button 5 times in a row will call emergency services. I learned this the hard way when I was very drunk and fumbling with my phone - cue a call back from 911 where I had to awkwardly explain in the middle of crowded bar that the call was made accidentally. If you have a young child you may want to consider disabling this feature as it's very easy to accidentally trigger and law enforcement is required to respond if they don't receive and intelligible response!
- MereInterest 3y agoI learned this when the power button on my Pixel 3 started repeatedly firing. My phone started repeatedly rebooting, opening the camera, and calling 911, all with no user input. Because the phone was booting up and initializing the camera, the GUI would take a while to respond. It would display the “slide to cancel”, sometimes overtop the camera GUI, and wouldn’t respond when I tried to cancel it. The only thing that stopped it was running out of battery. This started at 10 PM on a Friday night, and lasted a few hours.
- callalex 3y agoYet another reason it should be a crime to sell a phone with a non-removable battery.
- mlindner 3y agoOn iphone you can call emergency by just holding both side buttons at the same time.
- dangus 3y agoBesides all the people who are telling you that you can call 911 on a locked phone, I will also point out that voice assistants are a good way to go as well. E.g., “Hey Siri, call 911”
- pizzafeelsright 3y agoI am surprised at the lack of reading comprehension in these replies. I am certain 911/emergency services work on a locked phone. My point is teaching a toddler From my locked phone it is ~8 steps. Power on, swipe phone, press emergency button, type in 911, send. Power button x >5 seems to trigger it as well. This may be the better option.
- markild 3y agoAbsolutely every cell phone has the ability to call emergency numbers from a locked device. Even without Sim card.
- Faaak 3y ago> Even without Sim card. Depends on the countries though. A sim card (whether expired or not) is needed in France to call 112
- crote 3y agoTo be pedantic: the cell phone is required to have this capability - the network just doesn't have to accept it.
- vonunov 3y ago(also note it will use any available cell tower operated by any provider and will preempt normal calls if the station is too busy, so the appearance of no signal/"bars" shouldn't discourage trying to call 911)
- dilyevsky 3y agoEmergency calls must work in locked mode (i think by law). On iphone its two button press and a swipe - def easier than operating a rotary phone from when i was a toddler
- labster 3y agoThat depends on where you live. It’s definitely easier to dial 112 on a rotary phone than 911 or especially 999.
- c2lsZW50 3y agoOn android you can dial emergency lines on a locked phone as well from the lock screen, I suppose iOS has the same function?
- matthewmacleod 3y agoYou don’t need to be able to unlock the phone home in order to place an emergency call. In an iPhone trying to swipe-unlock will show an “emergency” button, for example.
- Traubenfuchs 3y agoOn iPhone you can enable it to send an SOS message to a selected contact + call 911 by pressing the power button 5 times in quick succession. With electric shock collar assisted conditioning, the average toddler should be able to learn how to do that in just a few days.
- vardump 3y ago> With electric shock collar... Ah, that's the thing I've been missing all the time. All this time I thought it was about good parenting.
