I have to assume this is one of the least frequently paid taxes. I wonder how often people living in Clark County are fined for not paying this tax?

- hipadev23 3y agothink in reality it’s just for things that have to be registered: motor vehicles, boats, RVs. can’t imagine anyone paying taxes on home goods willingly.
- anonymouskimmer 3y agoI have. My state has a question on the tax form about out-of-state purchases. Most of what I buy in the US online already collects sales taxes, but for things I buy overseas I've estimated the tax and paid the estimated tax a time or two. It usually doesn't matter though, as there's an exemption up to a certain dollar amount, which I usually don't exceed.
- blinded 3y agoCan't find the exemption amount. Can you link?
- anonymouskimmer 3y agoI was wrong about my state, it's been a year so I was probably forgetting some particulars. For other states I don't know where you'd find this information, but an example is: https://www.salestaxinstitute.com/sales_tax_faqs/i-bought-a-taxable-item-and-the-seller-didnt-charge-sales-tax-do-i-have-to-pay-the-tax-anyway https://www.salestaxinstitute.com/sales_tax_faqs/i-bought-a-... : Some jurisdictions have a minimum dollar threshold for accrual of consumer’s use tax. For purposes of consumer’s use tax, Chicago, Illinois does not tax the first $2,500 of purchases annually. Other jurisdictions apply minimum amounts subject to tax based on the nature of the item sold, for example, the city of New York does not apply use tax to the first 400 cigarettes brought into the city or in the possession of an individual.
- blinded 3y agoThanks for that.
- blinded 3y agoOn smaller things yes I don't think anyone pays these taxes. But on bigger things (like cars) the tax is applied.
- anonymouskimmer 3y agoIt looks like it's enforced primarily against businesses, which probably are pretty good at paying the tax: https://www.salestaxinstitute.com/sales_tax_faqs/i-bought-a-taxable-item-and-the-seller-didnt-charge-sales-tax-do-i-have-to-pay-the-tax-anyway https://www.salestaxinstitute.com/sales_tax_faqs/i-bought-a-... For consumers and very small businesses it also looks like there are often exemption thresholds which make paying it a legal requirement something that a typical consumer who buys out of state will not run in to.
- GartzenDeHaes 3y agoYou can't register a vehicle without paying the tax, but there's no other enforcement besides tax department business audits. Sometimes politicians and other public figures will pay it.
