Not even Notepad is safe from Microsoft's big AI push in Windows
- MaxikCZ 3y agoYes, over the years I was getting annoyed at Notepad because it always started so fast and without popups asking me random stuff. Finally this devil app can subdue to the only true god: Distractor.
- sydbarrett74 3y agoCoPilot will be the Clippy of the 2020's and beyond.
- JohnFen 3y agoI hope this isn't the case. The huge value Notepad has is that it's minimalistic. Adding things to it only reduces its value. If they really feel they have to add this stuff, then add it to wordpad. Leave notepad alone!
- deafpolygon 3y agoI see a future where Microsoft will stuff AI in every application, and charge you tokens for its usage. You get free tokens per month, and if you want more - you'll have to pay.
- soared 3y agoI’m not clear on why notepad gets updates when ms word is more likely to be used for actual writing?
- Woeps 3y agotruth be told, to have tabs and auto restore not a feature that I personaly dislike. But for the rest.... it's fluff that's not needed for notepad. Now watch it get to much development and ultimately killed/scrapped.
- vitorgrs 3y agoBecause people actually use Notepad and no one use Wordpad?
- clipsy 3y agoBecause leaving a perfectly fine piece of software alone doesn't pay anyone's salary.
- thesuperbigfrog 3y ago"It looks like it has the same credits system that Microsoft uses in its Cocreator feature in Paint to let Windows users know how many more times they can use these AI-powered features. Microsoft hasn’t announced pricing for these credits yet, but one can assume the company will eventually start charging once you run out of them. Bing uses a similar system, but once you run out of “daily boosts,” the image creation through DALL-E simply slows down." The ghost of Clippy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Office_Assistant https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Office_Assistant) is coming back to haunt lots of Windows applications, but this time with microtransactions and telemetry. I really hope there is a way to turn it all off and remap the AI key to do something besides summoning the current application's Copilot (Clippy ghost).
- wodenokoto 3y agoMicrosoft is betting that co-piloting is the new spell check, and I don’t think they are wrong on that. So the only thing odd here is that copilot in notepad is advertised as a notepad feature and not a natural consequence of textfields getting copilot.
- JohnFen 3y agoAre all standard text controls getting a copilot tie-in? If so, that's insane. Windows just continues to degrade.
- happymellon 3y agoEnshittification. Nag screens reminding you to top up your credits when using Notepad for its neo-autocomplete.
