- interbased 3y ago> Yet self-talk enjoys certain advantages over inner speech, even in adults. First, silent inner speech often appears in a ‘condensed’ and partial, form; as Fernyhough has shown, we often tend to speak to ourselves silently using single words and condensed sentences. Speaking out loud, by contrast, allows the retrieval of our thoughts in full, using rhythm and intonation that emphasise their pragmatic and argumentative meaning, and encourages the creation of developed, complex ideas. This totally makes sense and I can relate to this. I usually think out loud when I'm driving a coding collaboration meeting, and it makes things come together much clearer more quickly.

- highspeedbus 3y agoThat's a habit I may have done way too much in the recent years working from home. It indeed helps organizing thinking, but that come with some disadvantages. Once you get too accustomed, it can... slip out at inappropriate times. Now I believe that being able to structuring your thinking before speaking (or typing) helps in a multitude of situations. Sort of a different 'brain muscle' being trained.

- sureglymop 3y agoI do this a lot when I am studying or researching. I may even take a break from reading to stroll around the carpet in circles and draft my thoughts by speaking out loud as if I was holding a conference. While doing that, I question what I am actually saying and can often "retract" a sentence and start performing again. Maybe it would seem crazy to see me do this but it's actually a great way to actively recall what I know and have learned.
